I'm going to say the 1977 FJ40 would be a hell of a lot more fun, except on long road trips maybe.

To answer honestly, I know values shot way up the second they got pulled from our market. I don't know if it'll be the offroad equivalent of the MkIV Supra or 86 in 20 years but we'll see.

I was with a college student looking at new Lincolns and about fell over when I saw window stickers for $98000. I grumbled to him about how ridiculous that price was and he responded I don't think it is that bad. Look at what all you get with it. All I could see is something that is going to break down, fall apart and rust out in 10 years with 150000 miles on it. I always thought a car is something you drive from point A to point B. I never needed to be entertained while I was driving or needed something to keep my hands and butt warm.
I am 62 and recently purchased my last new car. I have a 13 Sienna with 67K, 17 Tacoma with 30K and a new Mazda CX5. The plan is to make these ones last as long as I do. The price of gas scares me but EVs have a long way to go before I will consider them.

    Funny story, bro!

Heck, 62...my mother (who is 78) would say, you're a baby retiree. Her and my step-dad go to the Senior Center daily but sadly, have stories about friends who stop coming. I'll skip the details.

I definitely agree with you about that sky-high price for a vehicle. It better give some REAL pleasure for that price...lol! Just Kidding!!!

These days, my threshold is right at $40K for any type of vehicle. Anything more takes some real thought before pulling the trigger.

I say this VERY loosely but $50K would be my top obligation but I'd better have a darn good reason to do it!

    Still stock completely capable!
My uncle works for Toyota (Canada) guy bought a 2018 TRD pro 4Runner brought it back 2 months later for a oil change and the thing was smashed and scratched everywhere they said “wtf that’s a $80k suv are you nuts” he said “well I wanted a turn key off-road monster and I got it! If I didn’t want to use it for what it was intended I wouldn’t of bought it!”. I own a Tacoma and can’t afford to abuse it like that but I wish I could. Some people who can afford things will use them for what they were designed for. I know @MESO and @JoeCOVA use there trucks a lot harder than I do lol!

A few years before that, I recall my dad making $17k a year in Colorado. He had a nice house, two cars, a travel trailer, took a month vacation each summer (ie. the travel trailer), a stay at home wife with two kids, and wow ... was Colorado a different state back then.

Anyway, I bet your FJ-40 was sweet!

Yep first new vehicle ever at the age of 49, bought this last October, could say it was an early 50th birthday present since I turned that this spring. Last most expensive vehicle was my ‘99 Tacoma slightly used for $17K, paid cash nursed that that thing for the last 20 years, it was costing me $1000-1500 every year to keep it going, this past year was expensive at $6K, was still willing to fix it, but she had enough…told me just buy a new truck you cheap bastard! Was able to pay cash for the new one, not because we are rich…it is because I am cheap and like to squirrel money away.

It was a little odd buying this go around, normally dealers do the “what do I need to do to get you in this vehicle today!” Had to wait 5 weeks instead. Was ready to hand over the money the day I went in, but having to wait…the more and I stewed over the invoice…kept on thinking, this waaaay more money than want to spend, and started to stress. Almost cancelled it, and was looking at a reman engine for the ‘99. Wife said she would kill me if I did that though… lol!

Now that I have been in the new truck for bit, glad I spent the money.

    Exactly!
If you look at what is modern vehicle, compare same models, and consider inflation (before this stupid shit), they’re really not too bad. In the next thread, we’ll see someone complain about why a Toyota cheaped out and didn’t add a heated shift knob and add color changing LED lights to the muffler.

Heck, you're old enough to remember when a 100k mile vehicle was rare to not be in the scrap yard especially, in the rust belt.

Neither is the off road group the target.

What Is The Typical Buyer Demographics For This Model?
Using data from J.D. Power, we discovered that most Tacoma owners are males with a median age of 55.
Besides, they earn, on average, an annual income of $96,471.

These Oreion Reepers have an attractive price & are street legal!

I know someone who has one of the earlier models & I've seen a few on trails. They seem to be pretty decent.

And "The Hits" keep on coming! lol

    Happy Belated Birthday, BTW.

I don't remember how old I was in 2002 & that $32K expense without doing the math...34...before that, I had a used 1984 Nissan Pulsar prior to my assignment to England in 1989.

Had 3 right-hand vehicles while living in England: Ford Saloon, Celica, Mazda 626.

Then when we got back to America, while living in Abilene, TX we bought the NEW, 1993 5-speed Isuzu Rodeo and then before departing for Hawaii, we had bought a NEW 1996 Honda Accord LX Sedan.

I didn't have to wait long for those previous vehicles...my Sport took a couple of weeks before she came into the dealership...I was anxious!

So, we both have taken different paths and approached our purchases from different angles. Each time for me, it was our growing family that required a new upgraded vehicle and doing a trade-in.

There is a guy in town that I see running around with one of those. I think you can make the Roxor legal here, just can’t take it on the interstate. My 2-Stroke dirt bike is legal, don’t really ride it on the roads, only if we have to tie trails together or run into town for fuel.

Yeah I think it's the same with the Reeper, not for highway use.

    Thanks!

First car was a ‘72 Chevelle, $1000…had to sell it after getting my license suspended for drag racing to pay the fines. After I got my license back, bought a ‘76 F250 work truck off my dad for $500, 3rd a ‘71 Chevelle for $2500, sold that and the F250, and at the age of 19 bought my first Toyota a ‘85 4Runner for $6K…ran that up to 225K miles (with one engine change), then a ‘92 Toyota pickup $6700, ran that to 150K, ‘99 Taco for $17K has 434K on it, still have it, but it is sitting in need of engine work, wife wanted to keep it for some strange reason. there is also a ‘73 VW Bus in there for $3500, but my wife mainly drove it, we had that for 8 years, sold it when moved for $8K, only vehicle I ever made money on.

It is weird having a brand new vehicle after buying used for the last 35 years, awfully nice knowing I won’t have to wrench on it for a while. First vehicle that I haven’t done my own oil change. Letting the dealer do it until it is out of warranty, might even continue to let them do it after. May even trade it in before the warranty is up. Which is out of character for me not to squeeze every last penny out of a vehicle.

I sort of wish i kept my 66 gto with the bigger 421 nascar motor but then again probably just as well not. That car became such a magnet with the local cops that i didn't have much choice, but to sell it. I saw it years later rotting in a yard when doing a job on the same road. It was stripped of the motor, and drivetrain. Hurt like hell to see it parted out.
