How to transport Kayaks

Think about storage and transport, and lifting a kayak that will probably be at least 75 lbs. I started off with a bed extender, very easy, but you may need to fix up some lights at the end of the kayak for driving at night or in bad weather. I now have a trailer with a collapsible tongue, and can carry up to 3 kayaks.

Nice to see people using Boonedox T-Bone on short beds with 13' fishing kayaks. That's one of the biggest reasons I'm looking at a Tacoma over a 4Runner. Way too much hassle to get a 75+ lb kayak up on the roof of an SUV.

 

I use a t-bone extender for my 12 ft fishing kayak. I bought a long bed this time around though so it doesn’t stick out the back so far.

 

Are those Whispbar accessories? If so do you know if the T-slot mounting would work with the 8020 style bars found on roof racks like Prinsu or Victory4x4?

 

Just rigging up something like this now....do you run a bow strap? Cheers

 

I had a Ford Expedition and transported my kayaks on the roof, but even the brackish water here in Florida has enough salt to cause rust and eat away several holes, causing leaks in the roof. When I bought the Tacoma, I invested in a kayak trailer.

 

I use a set of these for a bow strap. No issues

Since I got pinged about this thread I figured I post a quick update. I'm currently hauling dad boat and kid boat on the roof rack, using stern lines for both boats and a bow line only on the big boat. The small boat sits on a foam pad and I was using a Yakima SweetRoll for the big boat that I really didn't like all that much. This year it'll be the SweetRoll under the small boat and a Yakima DeckHand/HandRoll combo under the big boat.



In a pinch I can haul all of the boats, the newer small boat is the shortest of the bunch at 8' and does okay diagonally in the back.

First time with Kayak!

 

KB voodoo rack with a stacker can hold 4 kayaks.I went with a rhino stacker as they attached with t slot nuts. I would have had to modify my yakima stacker base to work. Can fit 3 to 4 additional kayaks in the bed if needed, with a cam strap securing them. Whitewater boats, so longest is typically under 12'.

Had the yakima bedrock on my second gen. It worked ok for boats up to 10' (on a 6' bed), but a little sketchy having boats right behind the rear window. Did have boats shift forward on a rough shuttle road and put a dent on corner of the cab.

 

I dont know what's more bada**. The kayaks or the fact that you're at a firework stand!

 

Yakima Jhooks on a Front Runner roof rack. 2 regular cam straps each, fore and aft also tied back to the roof rack for long trips with front runner stratchits.

Have taken these kayaks across the country numerous times, from WI to VA, to NM, TX, UT, WY.

 

Took ours on a 500 mile trip last month. No issues with this setup, we just checked the tension on the straps at every fuel stop.

 

A kayak trailer is the way to go especially if it’s a windy day. Nothing sucks more than trying to lift a 40+ pound sail onto the roof of a car. Downside is you need to have space to park the truck and trailer.

For those occasions and short trips I use a Rola ladder rack

I finally received all the parts I needed to mount my Yakima rack. I went with the 68" bars so I could lay my kayaks flat. It worked out great. One issue was removing the torx bits that held on the bed rail kit. The previous owner had stripped them all. I was able to knock the thick mount bars that slide into the bed rail with a rubber mallet without bending or damaging anything or removing the bed rail.

 

I have been using BillieBars with my Bakflip MX4. Two 10 foot kayaks.
