Someone wasn't paying attention in a parking lot and backed into my 03 XCab Pre-Runner. For any of you with knowledge or experience in this area does this look like damage that can be repaired without a door replacement?

It comes down to you and your insurance .

Just what can you live with??

In my case if the door opens and closes it looks good to me.

    Good luck!

Fortunately I was there when it happened and the responsible party is insured. I just filed a claim with their insurance company. We'll see how that goes.
The door functions fine. The truck just went over 100K and is was in excellent condition inside and out so what I'm willing to "live with" is making it look like it did before it was hit by someone backing up with looking behind.

Either way, there's gonna be paint to match. I think how much of that side of the truck they intend to repaint is also a big question to ask when getting estimates.

If I were you and the other party's insurance is footing the bill, I'd prefer a new door so I didn't end up with failed body filler at some later date.

    Just my opinion.

The body shop will give you an estimate to repair the door, re-skin it or replace it.

I'll guess that replace will be the lowest cost, as it will involve the least labor.

Paint work blending on a 20yo vehicle will be where the real skill shows up

Can you still buy a New Door or even a new Door Skin from Toyota for a 19 year old Truck??

Matching the paint is going to be fun sadly this is going to be interesting

Dunno. But there are likely aftermarket bits, especially since so many trucks were sold over several years and all the doors interchanged.

A good metal man can fix what's there, with minimal filler, but it would be labor intensive in terms of hours.

I had a similar dent on a different vehicle. A body shop took it out for a somewhat fair price... I wouldn't be surprised if it's cheaper to just find a new door though.

My truck needed a new door after the infamous scrapyard pipe incident this past February; Of course, my damage was a lot worse than yours and the door wouldn't open all the way...

2010 that had 144K and change on it at the time, and it was nowhere near being totaled!

Unless you have some sort of sentimental attachment to the door, why would it matter? Your insurance is taking care of it, and since the responsible part is also insured, your insurance SHOULD be going after them for the deductible.

These are how much labor rates are in the bay area. Family member has a car in the shop from an accident right now.
    $95/hr bodywork
    $95/hr paint labor
    $36/hr paint supplies

It needs a door or a skin, whichever they can find. Paint matching it shouldn't be an issue if they blend into the fender and into the cab behind the door. Not a complex repair.

A "New Door" for an 03 Tacoma is most likely be a used door from a wrecking yard. A good body shop should be able to take out that dent with minimal bondo. A good paint and body shop would probably not charge too much to spray the whole side of the truck. Just take off the fender flares, not hard. I did the same with my 03 that my kid dinged on a post.

After taking a few months to convince the responsible party's Insurance (Allstate) that I WASN'T 10% liable they FINALLY agreed to pay 100%. Truck is in the body shop now. Putting on a new OEM skin. They're going to paint as suggested above but the downside is they will repaint the cab and they will not be able to get the SR5 pillar emblem as it is now out of stock everywhere forever... unless you want to pay $500 to buy one from Korea (ebay). So we're making slow progress. I'll be happy to get it back and I'll deal with the emblem when I can.

Good way of looking at it. See if you can get something in writing from the Insurance Company that the job will be completed with the installation of the SR5 emblem

What shop is this? Actually sounds quite reasonable. I'm looking for a repaint.
