Dealership lying to me...

Put a 1k non refundable deposit down on a 2022 Tacoma Pro today. The dealership got a allocation for one to be built around mid June.

While at the dealership we did all the paperwork including the credit check. Is this normal to do before the truck is even built?

Our first choice in color is the lime green but the truck is set to be black, the sales lady said she would see if the factory could change it for us. Is she lying to me or can they actually request a different color?

I wanted to add on the bed light and locking tail gate but during the paperwork it was a $800 upcharge for those two items and on the web site when you build the truck it was less than $400 total. I was told by the sales lady that they cant ask the factory to add options but they were going to install them at the dealership. Other dealerships have told me they can ask the factory to install items but cant promise. So who is lying to me, either they can ask the factory to add options or they cant.

 

Non refundable! And you want green but are taking black? They must think you are really flexible, so definitely lying to you

 

I put a deposit yesterday($500) on a TRD off road. The dealer was transparent with me, they showed me what their allocation was and I got to pick the truck that I wanted from what they were receiving.

 

Dealers have zero communication with the factory.

It goes from factory to distributor to dealer to buyer. The dealer can put the request into their distributor, and that's as far as it goes. The factory makes what it makes, and the distributor takes what it takes.

A lot of options that people think are OEM, actually aren't. Things like floor mats, running boards, tonneau covers, roof racks, tailgate locks, etc are installed at the distributor, or sometimes even the dealer.

Toyota factories take no custom orders. They make them, the distributor gets them. If a buyer has a special request, the dealer puts the request into the distributor. Maybe they have it, maybe the distributor can find it at another dealer, it maybe they just wait until something close shows up. But no, there's no such thing as a bespoke Tacoma.

As far as non-refundable deposits go, that's a sucker move. There's no such thing. If you decide to walk, there are ways to get your money back. Don't ever ever let the dealer paint you into a corner.

You're the buyer, damnit. They cater to you. You don't cater to them. Don't forget that.

 

you dont need to do the credit check, its like if they think it'll show up soon - they are ready to go to finance you.

if you finance elsewhere, its a waste of time. but they don't want you to do that.

edit: do the tailgate lock and the bed lights yourself, its $180-200 if you order the parts. The bed lights takes 5 minutes

 

Would the dealer not accept a $1.00 deposit? $1.00 or $1,000.00 does not sound like much of a difference on a $45,000 + vehicle.

Unfortunately, you've been scammed. Seek legal advice if you don't get your money back and tell them that's your intent.

During the paperwork today the sales lady tried to slip in $800 gap insurance without even discussing it. $1400 in dealer addons too stupid to mention and another $2k in extended warranty, I declined everything that was added on except for license, tax etc...

 

I would have canceled the sale just on that bullshit...

 

Don't take a vehicle in the wrong color. End of story. Pretty sure if they cannot deliver you a product, you are entitled to your deposit back even if its "nonrefundable" My dealership said even though they say that, they'll refund it because someone else will take a tacoma. I imagine you can talk your way to that with a sales manager. It beats you writing 10 reviews about how they steal from people.

If you decide to do those installs yourself and you need resources on how to do the installs, let me know. Its really not hard to do either, just the lock takes 40 minutes or so.

I have a $500 (refundable) deposit down at another dealership for the past 4 months now, the sales guy told me if I can get ahold of one then buy it because he doesnt know when his next Pro is coming in, last year they only got 5, this year only one so far.

I dont have a problem with buying the black pro that is set to be built next month so not wanting to get the deposit back from today, at this time.

 

As a black tacoma owner... I may be biased but its a beautiful truck

 

I'd bail out of that deal, and go find a better dealer to work with. These guys sound unprofessional and greedy.

 

Hopefully it wasn’t cash. Cancel the check or credit card transaction.

ive been trying to buy a Hybrid Highlander, these dealers are really something. Market adjustments, interior and exterior protection packages, their version of lojack, window etching, Ive heard it all.

 

Wait, why are you doing paper work for a truck that doesn’t exist yet?

Normal circumstances: you put down a deposit and wait for a phone call. No credit check, no paperwork, until the truck comes in.

To answer your questions the dealer cannot call the factory and have the color changed but there are other ways to have the same outcome, primarily dealer trades before or after delivery. The dealer can install some options themselves but it is all basic crap you can do yourself for much less.

 

I'm 99% sure you can not change the color. It is worth the ask but it is pretty bullshit if they don't make the deposite refundable because of that. You wanted green, not black, that shouldn't be on you if they can't make it happen.

I put a deposite down on a white 2021 trd pro last year and I really wanted lunar rock. White was my second choice by not far off so when they came back and said that they could change all the add ons but not color I was okay with it. Dealers have no say on colors this close to a build date. Toyota as a manufacturer already has how many trucks, colors, transmissions, etc will be sold for the year and allocated. That really can't be changed.

My dealer could get the add on for the most part changed with no issues. They did not charge me a 400 bucks for lights lol. That shouldn't be a dealer installed thing, it's actually a port installed item when the truck arrives to port before the dealer.

That goes for lights, mud flaps, steps, bed mat, etc except for door edge guards or things that go on with paint.

 

I doubt if Toyota is still building '22 Pros.
