Though one thing I've noticed is that a lot of the houses I've looked Iowa have gas heat but an electric stove; Why is this? Is it a matter of the builder being too cheap to run a gas line for the stove, or customer preference at the time the place was built? This house also costs more now than my parents paid for a 2-year old, 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom, 2-story, 2,000-square foot house in Virginia Beach the same year this place was built; Don't want to think about what the lucky bastard who bought this place new paid back in 1998!

Townhouse, but I'd be willing to settle for it in the interest of saving money on a first place; Very rarely would it seem that "first homes" are "forever homes"...

    I’d rather have gas

If you really want gas, go to Taco Bell! :D

Seriously though, I prefer gas to electric for cooking; Also, every house I've ever lived in that had an electric stove had one with the stupid coil elements. Do they work? Yes...

However, they look unsightly and a bitch to clean. My parents haved owned five houses with natural gas heat and two of them did not have gas cooking. They also rented a house in Washington when my dad stationed at NAS Whidbey Island that had gas heat but an electric stove. In my neck of the woods, if it's a brand new house with public gas, it's getting a gas stove unless the buyer requests otherwise.

Also, the majority of single-family homes and larger townhomes built around here in the last 15-20 years have the oven and microwave built into the cabinet and a separate cooktop (my parents' is no exception). This setup was standard in my parents' neighborhood, but a few of my neighbors spent extra money to get a double wall oven and a separate microwave.

Easier to clean! I was at an RC show a couple months ago, and at least one motorhome had an induction cooktop; Know anything about those?

I'm a Realtor in Dubuque, and most new construction that I see built around here has gas as well as electric run for the ranges. Builders tend to put in electric ranges(unless a buyer upgrades to a gas range) because it's a bit cheaper. However, with the gas line being run, it's always an option. I'm sure back in the day they just ran electric because it was easier/cheaper.

This, when I make enough money to build a house, I'm going all electric with solar.

IC is a college town. If you like being in a college town then you'll be happy there.

When I was like 25, yes; However, in my early 30s I don't think my liver would want me living in a college town...

If you're really interested in moving to Iowa, my advice is stick to something near but not actually in Des Moines or Davenport.
