Is there any way to ID the gear ratio in a clamshell that’s out of a vehicle other than splitting the case to count teeth?

Lift, turn your wheel and count the number of revolutions your driveshaft does.

You can still turn the input shaft and count the rotations looking into the CV socket no?

    That's what I would try.

As for identification marks, nothing I am aware of and even the VIN seems to be wrong more than half the time.

It might work but getting a reference mark in the female splines would be a bitch. Then trying to see that mark as it rotates through the gear set. Splitting it is a 10 minute job. lol

Never been in a position where I needed to split the clamshell, don't you need to completely reset everything up after you do?
