I have 2 vehicles with the 2GR-FKS. My truck and my IS350. The engines are basically identical other than their tune. The Lexus came with the aluminum one stock, same part # as the truck. You will have no issues as long as the torque specs are observed and the maint. manual procedure is followed, they write those manuals for a reason.

Ive personally had a VW composite housing crack. Also a co worker just bought a brand new volvo. the other day he woke up to a driveway full of oil... It was a cracked composite filter housing... For that reason im going with the aluminum. It will last longer and I dont have to worry about it. Especially in a vehicle where ill be off the beaten path.... Makes sense to me as it is such a cheap part and meant for this engine in the first place. I am sure the composite housing is simply a cost cutting exercise.

I got an aluminum one because I sign onto this forum once a day and people tell me things I need to buy that I didn't know I needed five minutes before.

You over estimate use apes. I once bent a 1 inch cast iron flange over an inch installing a fire hydrant on a 6 inch water main before my boss looked in the hole, laughed, and told me it was good enough.

I now use one finger to pull a wrench as my brain says if I can still turn it, it must need to be tighter (I also have 2 nice torque wrenches for more important things).

I would say this is partly true...I'm guessing you are having a laugh at your expense--I bought one too but for my own reasoning.

There is a variable in this circumstance...that gets enhanced by people making fun of other's decisions and exploiting it; albeit just here on TW.

Review/analyze the situation and come to a conclusion.

Maybe keep the decision to yourself or come here and announce it.

it actually doesn't make a lot of sense. there's more range of composite plastics that have more 'give' to them before outright breakage than aluminum variations. it's one of the things that makes aluminum somewhat more dangerous structurally as in many variants it doesn't really fatigue, it just snaps. especially cast aluminum like what the replacement filter housing is made of.

I thought that the whole reason Toyota went to the composite ones was because of galling with aluminum to aluminum.

It doesn’t help if your dealership flat rate tech is zipping any oil filter on and off with a impact.

    So...

I don't understand. Tighten the housing until it sits flush. Why would people try to wrench it down beyond flush?

When I see threads like this I’m glad I have the 2.7L with the standard 1970 style metal can filter like the good Lord intended. And no Fujitsumoto valve going on my truck either.

Just changed the wife's 4 runner's oil today.
There is a definite and easy to notice point to stop.
Pretty simple, but i still hate the whole cartridge thing.

I feel I have enough real world experience wrenching on cars and dirtbikes that I feel more comfortable with the aluminum housing. If that changes after I have put some time on it, ill write back.

I picked up a magazine in 2010 while at the dentist and it mentioned how bad toyota was trying to cut costs in 2005. Something like the head liner in 2004 costed $202 and in 2005 when they made the major cost cuts the headliner was something like $57. Being that my 2005 was a major POS at low miles.... I saw the proof in the pudding. Sometimes the cost cutting items are what you are seeing and are not the engineering that you think they are.

I also know someone who worked in china at a factory. They refuse to cut costs to the buyers around the world and do everything they can with alternate materials to bring the cost down in order to not charge more to us.....

    Talk to ya later.

Plastic Housing Will Last a Million miles or 50 years if not overtightened and unscrewed using a cap wrench

OK, my take is for my use only. I bought an aluminum housing and installed it, I then noticed I had a composite housing sitting on the shelf that was clean and ready for the next oil change. At the next oil change I pre stuffed the composite with oiled rings and filter ready to go on as soon as I had the old one off. Less cleaning as I progressed though the oil change, i.e. save the bulk of the cleaning for when all is done with. What I did notice was at the next oil change my old eyes liked seeing the bright aluminum through the access panel of my skid plate better than the black composite thing. I now have two aluminum housings - it is just easier on my eyes. In use I see no difference in the housings.

I just did my first oil change at 70,000 miles a week ago Saturday as my 10,000 mile "free" oil changes from the dealership had run out. Makes you wonder if the dealership actually changes the filter as it took a 22" breaker bar to get it loose. I swear that thing was on there with at least 60 to 80 foot lbs!. Thank goodness I have the Motiv oil filter wrench. It did its' job perfectly.

How do you prevent galling? Oil on the threads?
