I don't think the 2nd gen tundra came with 4.0, however in the global market the GX is rebadged as a Landcruiser prado. Prados come with a 4.0, additionally in china the GX is sold as a GX400 with a 4.0. I won't be surprised if the 1UR-FE bolts right in. However I am prepared to plasma cut frames if I need to.

Yeah, sorry... i corrected my post after glancing at Wikipedia. Yeah, I cant picture any severe notching of the frame, firewall, etc. Having both vehicles and your ability as a machinist...should make this swap very very executable. Can't wait!

i think there were some base early 2nd gen tundras that came with the 4.0 v6, but i could be wrong.

i love the 4.6 in my gx - you will like the power train. the stock gear ratio is 3.90 i believe, so might not be worth spending the money to go to 4.30 - honestly with the tranny and v8 - the 3.90s do just fine and i am on 33s. no lack of power.

this is a great project - cant wait to see you pull it off

Okay I took a measurement of the furthest points of the V on the engine today. Forgive my primitive method but the engine measures roughly 28 inches. I didn't take a measurement of the 1GR but eyeballing it, it looks to be about 3-4 less wide than the 1UR. That being said, there is plenty of room on each side of the 1GR20220523_114459.jpg

The main concern I have now is the shock towers and headers. On the tacoma the shock tower is designed a litte different than the GX.

yea the early tundras came with a 4.0. Buddy had a 2009 or so. So should work :)

also agree that this is a great project. Love it. Wishing you the best.

yes. im under 2 hours away. IF theres a s/c for the 4.6 i would seriously consider it. i do like the idea of an ls swap but highly prefer keeping all toyota for my personal preferences. thanks for thinking of me Eddie!

adding one more donor vehicle to the donor possibility list is a nice note. at that id try to mount a tacoma cab on a tr4 frame. maybe less work too.

Thank you sir, yeah maybe when I am futher into it you could come check it out.

Also, I want to be transparent. GX460s are not cheap, even wrecked ones. I wanted a GX because I wanted AWD, traction control, bigger brakes, rear disc brakes and a similar frame if I need to cut a cross member off. There are definitely cheaper ways of doing this swap if you're willing to put in the effort of piecing everything out. This GX is a 2016 and it has 70k miles on it. The bidding stopped at $11600 and auction fees were $900. Additionally I had to pay a broker $150 for documentation fee. There are some good parts on it that I will be able to recover the cost down to about 10k. I've seen good low mileage 1UR-FE engines for about $6500 on ebay right now but then you need to worry about getting everything else to make it work. I like the fact that I have everything here to make it work.

4th gen 4runners came with a 2uz-fe 4.7 liter. Great engine and I love it in my 2004 Gx470. The 1ur-fe is newer 4.6 liter that makes more power and torque. Additionally it is aluminum whereas the 2uz-fe is a cast iron block so there are weights differences between the two.
