When I went looking for a Taco this past January, one dealership had one "for sale" on their website with the indication it was a "demo" truck. I called and basically it was the daily driver for the finance manager at the dealership. I offered to buy it and was told bluntly "just because we have 'buy it now' on the website does NOT mean we will sell it". It boils down to the fact they "must" supply the manager with another new truck if they sell this one, and since no-one could get new trucks at that time, they weren't going to sell it no matter what.

It didn't help they were condescending and rude on the phone, but it did convince me never to talk to that dealership ever again. The other dealership was not at all rude telling me pretty much the same thing, so guess who sells me parts for my (used) 2019 Taco that I ended up buying?

Note to dealerships: just because the market puts you in the driver's seat today does not mean it will last. Poor customer relationships WILL come back to haunt you.

Dealerships are about to go the way of Blockbuster video stores.

Basically, everyone's dream. In the age of the internet, we all know what we want and what we want to pay. Even though my allocation process was pretty straightforward, I could still feel the tension just being there. Too many games.

The process is guaranteed to be dragged out between the laws of supply and demand and the way that the allocation system works for dealers. A dealer will only get so many vehicles allocated each month. They do not know exactly what they will get until a certain point when the info is released. They can request a truck be made a certain way from the factory for particular customers but often they will look at what allocations other dealers have that will closely match what they are looking for then the sales manager from Dealership A calls other dealerships to try to do a "trade". In this sales climate I am guessing that unless two dealers have exactly what the other is looking for then most deals never get made and customer orders do not get filled as quickly. The OP could be in for a long wait.....

I think there’s probably a trend in that direction, but many vehicles are still bought on impulse buys. It’s a bit harder to pressure that sale when delivery is an ambiguous ‘probably 3-4’ weeks out. Immediate gratification plays a large role in many purchases.

Heard from the dealer, new truck has been allocated. Projected to be in late July. Although not an even swap, I am pleased with the terms.

In these crazy times there’s not a whole lot of difference between slightly used and new in value. I’m not posting exact numbers but it is fair.

Timeline is similar to my new truck purchase. It was allocated to the dealer on Nov 2nd and I picked it up on Dec 31st, slightly ahead of schedule.

I'm interested as well. I'll wager it will arrive earlier than planned.

For my truck it's a long story but I looked out my WY hotel window on arrival. Hey, a Toyota dealer across the street. Lets go talk to him and see what happens.

The world needs more WY business folks in the world. The dealer kept his word on everything, emailed me 90 days later and asked if I still wanted it?

I picked up the truck on New Year's Eve and drove it 1100 miles home through a snowstorm throughout the Rockies. Good fun until you needed a bathroom break ...

It was the perfect truck for this adventure.

Edit: all of the paperwork of the truck took <30 minutes at the dealer. Start to finish, including waiting for the manager to finish with a customer. This would not happen in CA.

If MSRP on new one is less than what Carvana offered you, I would negotiate for them to add some accessories at their cost. But I agree, if you can get within a couple hundred dollars, it is worth it to drive their loaner and have it over with. Time to road trip in their loaner and put some miles on it. Glad you are going to be satisfied. Then you can find a tuner for it so it will run like it should.

Sad, but I'm confident it's true.
