    "Kitchen" Build

I'd been planning on building out a countertop for the area where I have my fridge. After some hemming, some hawing, and a lot of procrastination (read: actually using the camper to get out of town) I finally set aside some time to make it.

The wood is 1/2" birch plywood for the countertop, and some scrappy 1/4" shop-ish grade plywood for the backsplash. Planning on putting up some honeycomb peel-and-stick tile, but wanted to at least put some finish on the wood in the meantime. The backsplash is pretty light weight-wise, so it's just screwed into the thumb screw holes. The support under the far right side is just tensioned in against the wall between the backsplash and the countertop.

    Kimbo.
Hi, new at this forum. I'm getting my Kimbo in July and wondering what recommendations there are regarding the Fan-tastic Fan vs MaxxAir. Any help and recommendations are appreciated.

Nice work! Big space saver that way. Looking forward to the additions.

Welcome and you don’t have too long to wait. Another owner has made the switch and can chime in. He had a post awhile back about it. Overall it was a real nice improvement with a little mod needed. @Profloundering

Very nice. I have a similar idea for mine as I did not get their fridge or sink installed. I really like seeing these DIY mods and will share mine once I have my Kimbo back home. I pick it up next week. Cheers

Looks GREAT!! Love to see what others come up with - I like the way you cut access for the control pad and made room for the hinges, quality work.

Profloundering did you have to cut a bigger hole in the ceiling for the Maxxfan? Or did it fit in the standard fan cutout?

    Kimbo.

Thanks for both your replies! Really appreciated. I've just been contacted by Colin for the final build confirmation. It comes standard with the Fan-tastic Fan 2500, but also have the option for the MaxxAir 6200 at an additional cost. When I read reviews online I get both positive and negative reviews. Any info from anyone who has either of these fans; reliability, problems, and different weather scenarios rain, snow. Would love to hear from you.

I have the MaxxAir fan. I switched to that option when I found out that the Fantastic fan was more susceptible to precipitation coming in through the fan — I'm in western Washington. Windy rainy, snowy storms at Mt Baker was the use case I was thinking about. It's been through more than a few incredibly rainy and snowy nights, and absolutely no drips come from the fan. It hasn't failed me yet and shows no sign of slowing down, the only problem is a slight squeak at low speed. It moves a TON of air.

The topic of steps comes up pretty frequently, but I thought I'd share what's been working for me.

I've been using this step for almost a year now and it's been absolutely perfect. For a stock 3rd gen Tacoma, the step spacing is about as perfect as can be from first step to the second to tailgate.

    upload_2022-5-27_11-49-0.jpg

The best part is that it's narrow enough that it can shove between the Kimbo and the tie-down, and the length is perfect so that it can wedge it between the wheel well and the back of the tie-down and stay put without bangin' around.

    upload_2022-5-27_11-52-44.jpg

This exact model doesn't appear to available anymore on Amazon, but there are loads of them that appear to be virtually identical in every way other than the color.

I am curious if anyone has ever used their kimbo as a “basecamp” .. I.e. gotten to a camp spot and dropped the kimbo off the truck? Mostly I am wondering what considerations you have given for security in that scenario to avoid someone rolling up and taking the kimbo? I imagine you could take off a jack or two to make it more difficult.

Other than a few AirTags inside I’m not sure. Times are getting harder for people and more will resort to thievery to get by. So far, removing the stands altogether is popular in this thread but that won’t really work for people like me who intend to spend months at a time in a Kimbo.

They are the same size, the holes are a bit off though.

Hey all, I know a few of you have installed diesel heaters instead of the propane stove setup offered by kimbo. In terms of mounting the fuel pump, where/how did you guys end up mounting to avoid the metronome ticking being transmitted too noisily to the interior? I am mostly talking about the cheap Chinese heaters which is my experience , but I imagine it would apply to the more expensive ones too. Thanks!

I have not installed a diesel heater in my Kimbo but do have some experience with them and keep an eye out for stuff - I came across this guy and seems to be a decent solution:

He's also a very interesting guy and quite the traveler.

pretty interesting! Will have to research that a bit. On my van install , mounting the supplied pump underneath the driver side front seat, made noise almost imperceptible except if you were close to the front of the van. Obviously the van is huge and the bed is in the back so there is distance there. But the overall ticking noise is pretty annoying if you do hear it. I am just curious how well the kimbo transmits or dampens sounds given the construction. Isolation will always help
