Meaning 90% of students find a way to manage. It sounds like your SIL is hustling. That's good. It's also hard. But I doubt she would be doing it if she didn't think it would give her a better life after the fact. I'm going to respect and trust her judgment that it is worth it.

We're secure, but I've always been an optimist because belief that success is possible is a requirement for success to occur.

Additionally, the US economy and markets have recovered and expanded after every pullback they have ever experienced. Statistically it is extremely likely that this continues.

I'm curious: Do you think expectations of disaster benefit you? If so, how? Serious question.

a 9% increase in costs is not something MOST people can absorb...A lot of people will adjust and do things like go out to eat less and spend less on entertainment which in turn continues to cripple businesses trying to recover from covid.
Expensive gas means less travel. Seasonal jobs/businesses don't make their nut in that precious summer window....Go bankrupt by the fall.

It benefitted me late last year when I pulled my retirement from the market... Otherwise, like in Healthcare we prepare for the worst and are cautiously optimistic.

In seriousness: Those articles are such silly clickbait I started ignoring them long ago. Their methodology is terrible because they do not consider assets, credit liquidity, etc.

...Which is how they will absorb it.
