The pilot shortage, along with all the others, makes me wonder when employers are going to tip over and start fucking paying.

Taco bell employees definitely need 20hr, nurses in the Midwest make ~30-35hr

Being a commercial pilot is a terrible life/career until you get to the majors.

The 23 year old carrying a hundred grand in flight school debt flying your commuter jet makes like $40k a year and lives in a crashpad with like 9 other pilots when he's on the road for the week.

In a month or so once wildfire season starts, I plan to be thrifty and do my BBQ over burning sagebrush

Yep. I wouldn't fucking do it either. Want more pilots? Double the pay, and pay for flight school as part of a 5yr employment contract.

Not worth it for the margins? Then get out of the way and let innovators innovate.

It's the same culture that overworks and underpays medical residents.

Yep. See this crap firsthand all the time.

Although to be fair many large hospital systems do in fact pick up some or all schooling costs for employees in exchange for employment commitments. They've gotten that far at least.

I don't know what number is, but I do know if you're having problems hiring it's too low.

Medium family income was $79,900, so half the country was below that with many far less income. 9% inflation hurts them the most. Gas prices are far higher as well, almost 50% higher. So much for “most” people not affected by a 9% increase.

In 2000 we were a net exporter of oil, now we even import Russian oil. Oil production down significantly in the US. Direct correlation to gas price increases.
I could go on, but yes there are reasons that are very clear as to causes.

    You guys really like strawmen.

"Can absorb" does not mean "unaffected". If you're gonna provide counterpoints, at least link them to arguments I actually made.

As for your point, yes, bottom half earners are going to endure the most discomfort from this. But the thing about being a below median earner is it also makes you a below median spender, meaning the majority of discretionary consumption comes from the top half of the income spectrum - and that is what powers the economy.

Energy is tricky, and part of the equation for sure, but gas prices are not keeping steel orders from showing up at new construction housing starts for 6 months. Theres more to it than just that.
