The dealer has to make that decision on if they want to deal with it possibly in the future or distance themselves from it ASAP. Hard to say what that value is to them. Lose a little now or possibly lose a lot more in the future.

What would they lose though? You think the truck won’t sell? How would the buyer know?

And if the engine fails it’s covered by the warranty.

there is always that chance that Toyota won't cover it though. I can see them sending engineers to look and inspect the damage if it was to get that far. They could very easily call it negligence on owner as shitty as that sounds. No proof anywhere on it. I doubt the current dealer put anything in the service records about it running out of oil and knocking after its first oil change.

It’s an interesting question as to what’s in the vehicle service records.

I wonder how deep Toyota digs on an engine failure claimed under warranty.

    All good points.

It'd be really cool if the dealership dedicated the Ranny truck to be a full time loaner/dedicated shop truck/long-term property of the dealer, to ensure someone else doesn't end up having to potentially deal with it down the road. But I think we all know how this goes.

Every time I pick the truck up from the dealer I start it and walk around, including popping the hood and checking everything...

The outcome will never be the same if and when this happens to someone else. Because this did NOT involve Toyota this involved an individual dealership. No rules apply here. The OP had good luck with this dealership making him whole again in my opinion

My concern is that I don't believe dealers are being notified of allocations that far in advance of shipments. Until he has a VIN and copy of window sticker or build sheet, this is a long way from over. They should be converting over to 2023 model on the line in July. Unless it is going to be a mid-year rollout.

I would also bet your truck :anonymous:

In reality, the Ranny truck is probably lightly battered and would spit out a solid 300k+ miles if given the chance (although I wouldn't want to be the once to chance it). I bet with my made up statistics, odds would say that an 18-26 year old male buys and wrecks the Ranny truck within 20k miles, and TW grieved its failing fate for nothing.

The truck will more than likely go to auction and bring top dollar. The dealer will be out of it all together. Seen it many times on similar issues on other vehicles. When you see low mileage vehicles on the lots or mostly at the auctions there are hidden issues. If there is a factory warranty remaining on the vehicle then it on the manufactory.

I used to work at a pretty large auction that handled lease returns from Chrylser/Gm, trade-ins for banks such as BECU/BoA/Wells Fargo, and a good amount of used car lot stuff. Most of what we did in the shop wasn't repair necessarily, it was inspecting vehicles for frame damage and expensive mechanical issues before and after the car got sold. Frames were a big deal obviously and on the mechanical side we had to find any problem that would cost more than $500 to fix. Not easy to do when you're looking at hundreds of cars a week with a crew of 3-4 guys.

If the cars were in good shape with no frame damage or mechanical problems they would roll across the block with a "green light" and the dealers would bid accordingly. If the car had issues there was "amber light" and "red" meant bid at your own risk. Some dealers would pay to have us inspect a car they were selling in the auction that night "just to make sure it was ok" .. uh huh.. actually they were trying to take a booger out of their nose and wipe it on us. They would do this constantly and you had to be careful and see it coming. If we miss a problem and a dealer overpays for a vehicle that is later found to have problems the auction would have to "buy" it back partially (or the whole thing). Process called arbitration..

The management people would get wind of a weird situation coming our way (like Ranny's truck) and they would come out to the shop and tell us "Do NOT green light this car, find something to fail it for so we (the auction house) DON'T have to green light it"

If a 7k mile tacoma came through the auction it would be an immediate red flag, a car dealer (used or otherwise) should have no problem selling a low mileage tacoma.. if I scanned it and found any codes related to cam/crank sensor correlation or timing chains it would fail and get red lighted.

I bring up the cam correlation codes because that's usually what sets when a timing chain motor is run without oil. Especially when it stalls out like OP's truck

Anyway, kind of a story.. but if Ranny's truck ends up at auction it would likely raise all kinds of suspicion. Hopefully a prospective buyer would be skeptical as well

    Nice job!
I believe many believe "the auction" is a dark place where only troubled vehicles get dumped.
Thank you for adding informed information of how the auction system works.

There was a corvette that came through the GM auction 20 years ago here and the original owner had killed himself inside the car and it was a couple days before he was found. The car was in perfect condition but it went to auction because NOBODY could get the smell out of it

I took my truck to the dealer and now my spare tire is missing.

I once had a customer accuse me of taking the dashboard out of his Porsche and switching with another car

Yea guy.. cuz it's really profitable for me to spend a week switching dashboards around between cars

We saw those cars from time to time, sometimes suicide or homicide. they got parked along a fence at the back of the lot and we were told to stay way from them. Bullet holes in the doors, blood stained seats, etc.. hazmat crew would show up and do their thing, the cars always sold for something even if it was just scrap value

While I was waiting to pickup a company truck one day I witnessed a 1966 Corvette come off the lift at a well known Chevrolet dealership. And went between the lift and the wall and smashed an employee tool box in the process. This was in 1986. As I was leaving the owner of the 66 was talking to the Service Manager and he was beyond pissed. Never heard how that turned out. o_O
