What Chainsaw do you run?

if memory serves me correct, I think I was responding to the claim that battery saws are equal to ICE saws. Not even close.

I cut my firewood every January/February and I live next to Maine. The ground is frozen and I don’t sweat as much, no black flies either.

I also work year round and have no choice but to use a chain saw in the cold. Light work, I use the battery saw, but anything involving hardwood, it’s ICE all the way

 

I don’t disagree at all. It all depends upon the intended use. I used gas saws exclusively lot clearing winter work, mainly because it was outside and an isolated area at the time. That’s about the same reasons we use ICE cars instead of EVs . Stopped burning wood when we built a super insulated home two decades ago. Never go back.

We live two miles in on a dirt road so blow downs is always a problem. Battery is beatable. I had to use Truefuel exclusively when I started using a gas saw infrequently. I’ll never go back to ICE tools of any kind.

 

we all have different needs and it’s good to have the choice still. Hopefully when battery is the only option it has far surpassed the performance of ICE.

 

Rockin my little 22 year old Poulan 36cc dude today on a silver maple. It runs awesome since I tuned it. Buzzed thru the 16" base cut like it was nothing. I keep looking at Stihl and Echo small saws to replace it but it runs so good I'd be crazy to get rid of it.

So I’ve been thinking of adding 1 more saw to the team, I have a 170 and 261. Locally a 400-c has come up which would fit in nicely for my firewood cutting. Not sure I “really need it” but they are not easy to find. Oh where is my money couch.

Custom skip chain after hitting the nail. Didn’t even get a tank of gas with this chain

 

ive been cutting with my "custom skip" chain for 3 sharpenings now. Not sure what I hit as the wood was clean but lost a tooth somewhere.

 

Bought this file guide, It’s a piece of junk. Going to just hand file the chain like I should have from the beginning.

Find one with the proper diameter file for the hook tooth, and it files the hook and depth gauge simultaneously.

 

can't go wrong with a good hand file but you can also go really wrong with a bad one. having watched my fair share of sharpening videos, once that suck out was Billy Ray saying get a file 1 step bigger than recommended, it gets the gullet and top plate at the same time. Been working well for my needs.

 

Yep, watched his video the other night. Main thing that stuck out was him saying throw your file guides in the trash.

AlwYs have been a stihl owner personally. Own a ms170 with the 14” bar and the 661cm with a 24” aftermarket Oregon bar and stihl 36” bar used for freehand milling and Alaskan milling. Love the 661.

 

My wife…a nurse…encouraged any training that I could find. She got tired of butterflying my knuckles hahaha. That started long before cellphones…and YouTube. Unfortunately mine came through the daily grind of clearing line for the power company. We cleared everything from Fresno CA to Yosemite National Park. Sharpened several saws multiple times a day. No guide…no time. You just got into a rhythm and knew what angle produced the best chips and straightest line.

Tools of the trade…
