WHOA. At least in this thread's example it's a current year vehicle so they still make them. 20 years old..not so much

Thanks for the update on your situation, just had my own mini disaster doing it myself. I have a collapsed wrist and it spasms from time to time and dropped a full qt of oil on the front of my engine, belts, skid plates and driveway 1 hr later I'm cleaned up and no leaks but it's still done by myself. Wish I hadn't f...ed it up when working. But I still enjoy doing it myself. Just need to use my brace.

That’s unfortunately true especially in the current climate. It is a sellers market and they know it.

Exactly. Finding a replacement truck was the route the dealer seemed most interested in and as many here have pointed out, they’ll stand to make a profit out of this mess. Fair? Absolutely not. But in today’s market, they hold most of the cards. One huge thing to my advantage is when I purchased my truck last year they were still negotiating. Anyone remember those days? Shortly thereafter is when everything went haywire on pricing and availability. The result is my 2021 has consistently appreciated in value since it was purchased. The deal I struck on the new one, although requiring cash from me, still puts me out the door for a figure that’s under what the norm is now.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Better question after all this, are you going back to the same dealer for the two years of complimentary service? You really held your composure through this whole thing (at least by TW standard). Kudos to you brother; you're a much better person than many that commented on this thread and glad they made it right.

A closer look would show they claim no damage was done and op isn't buying it, neither would I. Really if you get a deal you can live with then it's good. When I went to for a lemon law deal in the '98 with Toyota over 4 transmissions on a Corolla they looked at a rental car mileage cost x the current mileage and that was the deal corporate offered, it was more favorable to the dealer/ Toyota they were 4 transmissions into it. 24000 on the clock at 22 cents a mile in a different car. Best we could do. It was their way to make us whole as we got service from it. But it does give piece of mind.

The scenario sucks 100% but there was little chance you would have ended up with zero cost on your part. You were able to negotiate a solution that worked for you. It's not a win, but you didn't get boned dry. I'm betting the resolution was very near to my prediction on post 858. Looking at the big picture, a few bucks are worth ending the BS and hassle, it could have been a lot worse if you hadn't done your due diligence.

Rainyhill, here's something you might consider: Down the road when all the dust settles and you are happy, the dealers happy, post the VIN. It might prevent one of us or someone else who is less aware, of purchasing this truck.

Im hoping damage like this would be documented in the vehicles history or a Carfax report. There has to be a paper trail of all this. Right???

Probably why it will just be sold on the dealer’s lot as a “great” low-mileage Tacoma.

I didn't read all 67 pages of this thread. At any point did the dealer make a determination if any damage was done and did they inform the OP what the damage was?

No, they gave him a half ass report of the cause of oil loss, refill with oil, no lights on the dash and running normally and said everything was fine.

This engine may still go to 300k but I doubt it. Will it make 50k? Probably. Who knows for sure. But chances of reduced life expectancy are high. You don't have to be a pro engine builder or metallurgist to see that. The next owner is assuming the risk without knowing it. Generally not a big deal because folks buy used and take the risk all the time...but they are trusting a dealer who is covering something up.

I wonder if the next buyer asked for the full service history if this would be on there. Do you think an RO was opened where this was documented for the master check to perform his 'diagnosis' / 'verdict'?
