Gotcha. Thanks for elucidating. I thought a bit about going into carpentry when I leave healthcare here in a few years, but it looks like newbies get absolutely worked to death until they get a few years on. I'm almost 40. I'm not sure I want to risk my body on that. But I started doing some self-study and have gotten handy at basics and love the craft. I just don't think I'd love it with a boss and deadlines.

Own the construction company. Hammer a few nails and spend the rest of your day in the air conditioned F-150 lariat

I've been fortunate to have done a lot of very high end finish work. I still do quite a bit. The first time I did high end stain grade the guy I was working under handed me a sheet of paper. WTF is this for? He told me after I nailed the joint off to take the paper and see if I could slip it into the joint. If I could I was to rip it out and start over. That is still my tolerance to this day.

About 9 months ago I had to get reading glasses. I explained to the doc what I do for a living and how I needed to be able to see clearly. He hooked me up with a script and about 2 weeks later I get the glasses. Rad. I can see my tape again.

I was in the middle of stain grade finish so I put on those glasses and made a mitered inside corner. I've done this literally thousands of times. I got it nailed to the wall I looked at the glued joint. WTF Matt? The gap was HUGE. Shit. I pulled the two piece and started again. After nailing off the second one I looked at the glued joint. The gap was fucking huge.

I make mistakes but I hardly ever make the same one twice. WTF was going on? What was different? Then it hit me. Those readers? Yeah. 1.5X magnification. lol

If your retiring early from healthcare and don't need a 40 hour work week look into making jewelry and knick knack boxes. Check Etsy for how insanely profitable that can be. It allows you to do precision craftsmanship with ultra light material. lol

My brother does custom cutting boards and candle holders and shit like that on the side and makes bank. He just lists the shit for whatever price he wants cause he's in no rush. Fools paying $350 for a cutting board he put together in a few hours in his barn.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You might enjoy woodworking. It's worth a shot. I love it. I just wish I had more time to enjoy it.

I dont really care for wood work. I enjoy welding and metal fab way more than wood work.
If i had to pick any manual labor job it would be custom structural metal work...or boats.
I just think boats are the most beautiful thing. I would work on boats if i HAD to do a manual labor job. I can get focused and enjoy boat work.

i read the most accurate quote the other day. I was like, damn, that is very very well put...

"For boats. even the uglier ones, are among the loveliest creations of mans hands, and though owning them brings a train of debts, hang nails, bruises, bad frights, and all kinds of worries not experienced by those who content themselves with the more practical vices, the relationship between a man and his boat is as personal and intimate as the relationship between husband and wife"

I present to you, my 1986 wooden dory, next to my dad's 1993 wooden dory (his has the cuddy cabin), handcrafted by the same husband and wife master boat builders. Sucia Island, August evening.

Custom metal bannisters, railings, and handrails have made me a ton of $ as a side gig. I get a bunch of commercial customers just for ADA compliant handrails. A big plus is you can easily manage working conditions to maintain back and knee health as 99% is done in your own shop, just show up on site and install.

Sometimes you just gotta embrace the pain though. In the case of classic wooden boats, I'm happy to own
