History Time With Gritto

The Gonzalez Flag features a cannon and the words "Come And Take It".
This was in reference to a cannon lent by the Mexicans to the Texans to deter Comanche raids.
Due to the unrest immediately before the outbreak of the Texas Revolution, the Mexican Federales demanded its return.
The Texans refused.

It's unclear if the Texans were consciously referring to the ancient Spartans and their heroic stand at Thermopylae.
The Persian king Xerxes demanded the Spartans lay down their arms.
King Leonidas famously replied: "Molon Labe".
Which means literally "Come Take".



The Gadsden flag is well-known, of course.
But I bet few of you know the story of this flag.
It was given to me by a friend at the Club, a Navy vet and retired policeman.

This is the "First Navy Jack", in use by the US Navy from 1775-1976 and 2002-19.
A Jack flies from the jackstaff of a commissioned naval vessel when moored or at anchor.
