Strange vibration/growling when 4h is engaged going higher speeds.

Hi, not sure if anyone had this problem but, at speeds between 20 and up i get a wierd vibration and kind of growling sound in the front end only when 4 high is engaged, its not constant, it mainly does it when i release the gas but it also does it when going a steady speed. I have a pro-comp 6" with blstn shocks. could my dif be going out or is my axles at a bad angle, kind of lost on this one. Thank you

Mine is making a kind of rotating growling sound in 2 wheel drive at speed,i cant figure out what it is either.

Thanks OZ-T ill do some searching,the noise isnt real loud, at first i thought it was the old tires,but even with the new tires i still hear the same noise,ill do a search as you suggested, thanks.

 

You're suggesting that a vibration and growling from the front differential is a normal condition ?

 

this guys is out of his gord by no way useing yiur 4 wheel drive should it vibrate or growl i use 4 wheel drive on all types of vechiles on a regular basis this includes trucks, tractors i have driven hundreds of miles on hard sufaces locked in 4 wheel drive any time i have ever had a problem there was some thing internally wrong.

 

I engage my 4wd occasionally, as indicated in the manual, to keep it lubed. If it weren't for the light on the dash, I would not know it's engaged. It goes clunk when it locks in (sometimes) and is then silent.

Last time I heard growling noises coming from a drive axle, I had 3 teeth missing off the ring and a cracked spider.
Only noise I've ever heard on any 4wd vehicle with 4wd engaged is maybe the whine of the transfer case when in low. ANd that's not in this one. THough I've only had it in low a couple times.

Growling and vibration are NOT normal .

 

I'm neither dumb enough to drive on dry pavement in 4x4 , nor stupid enough to think growling and vibrations are a normal result of engaging the 4WD .

Even then, really just parking lot turning. Your tires can scuff away binding action at any speed above 10 or so. Normal surface street driving without corners or VERY wide ones will be fine. Curves are also fine. Just not "turning" YMMV, Sand at 4 mph is probably more "sticky" than pavement at 20.

BUT.. yea sounds like maybe universal or gears. could disconnect your drive shaft and drive it in FWD to see if the noise goes away maybe.

 

I have a 2012 Tacoma v6 4l with 11000 miles on it. For nearly 4 weeks I've noticed a low rotational whump__Whump___whump__ noise from the front end. It's only audible while in 2WD and at speeds under 20. The rotational vibration can be felt in the gas pedal and steering wheel, but only slightly. Engaging 4H makes the noise go away. Colder temperatures (near freezing) appear to dampen the effect, but noise returns after the vehicle is warm.

First dealer visit, they claimed it was a rock in the brake.
Second visit, contaminated front diff fluid
Third visit, the Dealer claims that this is an acceptable noise and that the vehicles performance will not be affected.
