Okay so my truck has been making a clunking sound going from drive to reverse or reverse to drive. So somebody said something about u joints so I got some new u joints and under here under my truck right now, I can move the driveline up and down from The Middle on up along with that my transmission moves not so sure that's normal. I'm assuming carrier bearings out but I don't know I don't know nothing about this s***. Thanks for everybody's help.

So you are saying the rear end of the transmission is moving?
That’s not normal. Some play in the carrier bearing is normal. But it’s honestly very hard to explain what normal is, it’s one of those things you have to see Good vs Bad.

    Who did the U-joints?
If it was a shop, they should have told you about the carrier.

In case you do end up buying the center bearing here is the part number Dana 5002334. It is the same as OEM.

    If you do it yourself.
General consensus is - The arrow points to the front of the truck on the new one.

Ehh just tried to change mine, broke the driveshaft….I couldn’t get the flange out in the middle. Just ordered a Tom woods driveshaft.

I guess my question is, how far can I drive on a bad one?!

Well it depends how bad it is. Mines was whining for the last 2k miles. But if you keep driving like that, it can lead to other stuff breaking

I drove on mine for a while with it clanking around, but definitely wouldn't recommend it because it was TOAST when I finally replaced it! Go ahead and get it replaced, it's easy to replace & relatively inexpensive.

Whoever replaced the U-Joints should have noticed the carrier bearing was bad or was starting to go bad.

If your tranny is moving, I'd get that looked at as well...

How? I know when I did mine I had to use a shop press with a wheel bearing race remover to remove the bearing.

I’ll post pictures when I get home. But I took the middle u joint out. Then there is a 22mm nut that you take off to get to the carrier bearing. Once I took the 22mm off, your supposed to pull off that other, small peice of the driveshaft that looks like a Y. Well mine wasn’t coming out. Used a hammer, but in the end I put a puller thru there and it broke the metal on that piece. The little y.

Yup that is where I got stuck at and had to use the wheel bearing race remover to take it off since mine was stuck on it.

That piece is called a yolk. I'm curious what specifically was damaged—did one of the forks of the yolk completely break off?

I too had some struggles getting that yolk off, but some moderate percussive maintenance got it loosened up.

Okay. The transmission does move, I noticed the zirque on the front u-joint is not rounded, it's like it has been sheared off, and there is like a rainbow of grease above and around that u joint. Im doing all this myself, so I appreciate everything y'all are saying thank you. So,.I'm taking the driveline off as soon as Im....ill keep you posted!

A little movement is ok as it sits/connects vis rubber bushings/mounts. However there should have no free play. Below is too much movement on my former center bearing. See DIY center bearing thread below. Spicer 5002334 or 5002007 will fit, with the latter specified for 4WD models because it has seals at the ends, but either will fit. I have the -334 in my 4WD.

As someone whose done their carrier bearing it's a relatively simple job. It's a bitch getting the bearing off the driveshaft and the new one back on since its pressed on. Doable for sure, but time consuming.

Thank you everyone for your help. As I have no experience at this kind of thing, I have done TONS of research on it and I think I finally feel okay with doing not only u joints but carrier bearing and bracket as well!! Basically whatever needs to be done under my truck including RR diff fluid, im going to start on right now!

If you do the rear Diff fluid. I’d recommend a 24mm 6-point socket.
That plug is thin and soft.

Don't buy a cheap carrier bearing.

Or do buy a cheap(er) carrier bearing, and fill the holes in the rubber bushing with silicone. Got the idea here after replacing my cb after ~1year.
There’s a thread on that here somewhere.

I would not do that. A cheap center bearing is going to be cheap all around, not just the rubber.
