I agree in theory with Adam that getting ripped off “sucks”, and I do not like anyone having to pay over MSRP. However, Toyota is increasing prices. They just did an unusual mid-year increase of $450 on all 2022 Tacomas. The price increase for 2023 will be significant (probably not $10K)

I live in the northeast where the tacoma market has been HOT. It's starting to calm down now. The over priced used tacomas/tundras are starting to have price cuts and more new trucks are slowly becoming more avialable.

Paying a market adjustment on a tacoma is stupid.

I was able to take advantage of the current market last week before it cooled dramatically. I sold my 2015 Tundra to CARMAX for only $1900 less than I purchased it new in the fall of 2014.

“The truck is arriving at the dealer in a couple weeks and I put a $1000 deposit/hold on the truck, however I noticed on the paperwork someone hand wrote +$2500 for"market adjustment" on the price”

Now that you know which dealer has “your” truck, maybe you can find another one (who doesn’t charge a mark-up) to trade for it?

Thanks for all the replies. I'll clarify that I do not have rental covered by my insurance. I'm lucky to have a friend who's letting me borrow his honda civic for a little, but I WAS living out of my Tacoma and camper setup, so now time is important to me bc I'm staying with friends for the time being. I don't wanna burden them for like 2-3 months looking for a truck. I'd like to get back on the road by mid-summer too, in order to enjoy the weather out here. Fortunately the first salesman I talked to didn't mention at all this $2500 markup. It didn't come up until maybe my third conversation at the dealership, and it was a different salesman who brought it up.

Fools paying more than MSRP are just that- fools. And they're making the market more difficult for those of us who aren't fools. If you want to justify your overspending, have at it.

The good thing is my insurance payout for the total loss of my 04 Tacoma was almost double what I paid for it only 2 years ago... Seems like the insurance companies are recognizing the market too.

    It's a manufacturer's suggested retail price, not a manufacturer's maximum retail price.

I believe in the free market. What is being observed with cars is no different than dynamic pricing on tickets to concerts or sporting events... A team / performer will announce a price for a ticket, and when you attempt to get a ticket at that price, poof... the price is higher because of demand. And this is not the secondary market, but the primary market. This is nothing new. The auto industry is playing catch up. What about housing markets? What determines fair market value for apartments?

Does it suck? Yes. But as I've gotten older, I take things in stride, and believe the market sets the price. If I want it, I will look to buy it. If I don't believe the price is fair, I won't buy it. I won't pay $350 for a nose-bleed World Series ticket whose price started at $175, but there are plenty that will. My choice.

Dealers wouldn't be selling above MSRP if there were no buyers.

    No you didn't...

I think you are looking at the market from only one side.

If I get a new Taco at / below MSRP, should I be allowed to sell it for whatever the market will bear? What if I pay a dealer $40,000 for it, then sell it to someone else in a week for $45,000? Should I not be allowed to do that? If MSRP were too high, there would be a plethora of Tacos on lots just begging to be bought... There would be a plethora of used Tacos waiting for new owners...

People should be able to do what they want with their money, even if their wants impact the perception of cost as seen by others.

I think we will have to agree to disagree.

I never said that dealers shouldn't be allowed to sell over MSRP to fools, and I never said that you shouldn't be able to sell yours privately for whatever price.

I said that paying over MSRP is something that only an idiot would do.

    You're justifying stupidity.

If someone buys something - anything - at a cost, and can sell it for more, then the original cost is too low.

Some may argue that the stupid person is the one who sold low... and that would be the dealer in this case.

    Not really.

I just looked for fun. A dealer local to me has over 80 Tacomas listed, and every single one of them has at least a $300 discount right out of the gate. They have a good reputation and tons of people I know have gotten no nonsense deals from them over the years.

If you dummies want to overpay, go for it.

Obviously a high volume dealer... But what if you're not local to this dealer? Should one pay over MSRP locally instead of making arrangements to fly one-way to retrieve it? Maybe it's cheaper in the end to pay over MSRP locally when factoring in one-way airfare, taxi, gas / tolls for the return drive, and someone's time traveling - which can be very subjective - and getting tags locally (assuming an out-of-state dealer). Everyone's situation is different.

The dealer who sells at msrp is also going to create a lot more returning customers.

These people paying 5-10k market adjustmets are going to be real pissed when truck values drop from this gas crisis. pay 55k for a tacoma and have it be worth 30k 2 years later is going to leave a ton of people upside down on their loan or waste a ton of money putting down a big down payment.

Not saying this is going to happen but sub 20 mpg vehilces are going to take a value hit in the next few years.

Since I just sold my Tundra, I would love to speak with this dealer having access to 80 new Tacomas. What is their name and location (and huge thanks)?
