The Black Fender Flares and Bumpers

I posted this a few months ago and didnt get a reply so I thought I'd try again.

I have the "base" model 4 cyl 4x4 access cab. I just recently discovered there was a V6 model with the base package (or lack of package, whatever...) made. Two questions:

1) Anyone know the price difference between the '08 base model 4x4 access cabs and the same truck with the V6? I paid around $21k for mine in the 4 cyl.

2) I have done some searching for fitment/swapping out of the black fender flares and bumpers (with the color-matched SR5 and TRD models) on Tacoma World with no luck. Anybody done this swap? Any fitment issues or are the SR5 and TRD flares/bumpers the same size as mine? Pictures? I want to replace what I have with ones that are color matched.

I've looked around enough and havent found a thread about this specifically, so if you have a link to one I would love to get it from you.

 

I've got a 2008 V6 Access Cab, base model (black flares and bumpers). I paid 24K out the door on mine.

 

Sounds good, thanks for the info... I should have spent the extra $3k and gone with the V6. After driving my friend's I know I made a mistake (IMO), but I still like my little 4 banger.

 

My advice would be to get the existing ones painted.

SR5 package was $1500 in '07 so if you consider I paid $23,200 for mine, the V6 comes out to around $1000. Now, I paid invoice but that should roughly be the amount.

I think the black just looks more 4X4, but that maybe the old school in me since this is the 4th or so Toy 4X4 and all the others had black.......

Much as the V6 has a bit of extra oomph, the I4 is a great engine, probably more durable in a long-term sense, modestly more economical (both from the standpoint of initial cost and fuel consumption), and unless you need to regularly haul a heavy trailer your AC with the 4 ought to serve you well.

My base regular cab is the same color as yours (Silver streak mica) and has the black bumpers and fender flares. I love the look and others who have seen it, and contrasted it with the more solid color ones, have commented that they like it better as well. Plus, people with the painted ones have had some issues with discoloration, etc., so I'm real content with my black trim.

I realize that much of this is very subjective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.....

 

Ive got the base model with the black flares and I love them. If I had the painted ones I would be afraid of getting them scratched all the time.

 

Took it too Main Auto Body and they weren't sure if they could paint it because of the texture. They were afraid the paint wouldn't stick.

 

I'm starting to wish I had the black flares........



Maybe we can work a trade?

 

Nevermind. I don't think it would work because the front part of the fender is attached to the bumper.

I haven't seen anyone switching from black flares to color coded or any success stories about painting them, but some guys have changed colored to black using bed liner materials or bushwacker fenders http://www.bushwacker.com/. So I'd say just get use to them. Add black wheels and other accessories to make them 'match' better. I think they look good on some trucks.

 

if you're really serious about getting the color matched flares, shoot me a price for your black 'base' model flares. im considering going with a black/white scheme on my truck.

 

We have the same things going with our trucks just mine is white. as said before i think the black flares are more agressive looking.
i also see you have the fogs installed. did you get oem ones or an aftermarket brand? id really like to put fogs on my truck ASAP

 

Looks like the key to getting over the look of the black fenders is getting black wheels!

I also thought about getting fogs just for looks, but haven't looked into what it would take.

Oh and I'm going to debadge as soon as I can get around to it, debadging or blacking the badges also makes the fenders flow better.

 

im just going for looks to haha i hate having just black inserts in there. i know our trucks are already prewired for them so it wont take much. the only thing holding me back is the price of the oem ones because ive heard all the others wont fit right? but i could be wrong!

 

I like the black. It's more 4X4. I coated mine, along with my bumpers, with Herculiner and am very happy with the results. You should be able to paint yours with the proper prep work and primer. My Forester had a similar texture on the flares and I was able to prime them and paint them to match the body color. There was some chipping due to the flexible nature of the flares though. Color-matched flares will swap right out though but do be careful pulling yours off. The clips in the fender sheet metal (square holes) and in the plastic front bumper are expensive. You will most likely want to remove your fender liners and possibly the fenders to save the clips. Use needlenose and a small screwdriver to carefully remove them. I made the mistake of just yanking one flare off and had to make a rather expensive order for small blue plastic clips. The clips on the front bumper are easy to access and remove from behind with a slotted screwdriver or needlenose. Good luck and shoot me a PM if you want more info!
