Pretty disappointing note from the article….

“Just as important, fuel efficiency remains the same as the V6 for this higher-torque engine with a manufacturer-estimated 24 MPG combined. The new engine, standard across all gas grades, is also more environmentally friendly, with more than a 50% reduction in NOx and NMOG as well as an improvement in CO2 emissions compared to the outgoing V6 engine.”

Looks like the Hylander is estimated as the same fuel efficiency numbers as the V6 with the turbo 4. So we’re looking at similar efficiency on the Tacoma once it gets it as well one would guess. Pretty rough news IMO for the new refresh.

Be a welcome addition for the low end torque alone.

The efficiency numbers are very disappointing though… give me a V6 over a T4 with similar efficiency all day.

Living at 6000+ feet above sea level, I would take the factory forced induction that has a Toyota backed warranty as a positive.

I suppose I’d still pick it over the V6–shitty air quality from vehicle emissions is definitely a thing. And the added torque seems interesting for those fussy about the V6.

But if one of the competitors offers a solid 350 mile battery midsize truck that’s relatively affordable, it’s gonna be first on my list….for 2037 when I get a new truck.

My guess is they're going this route to keep up with the ever tighter emissions standards.

The way the emissions tests work, you could burn twice as much fuel to gain 10% fewer emissions (and burn more fuel per mile) and still get a better score- but they're not accounting for the environmental damage done by creating twice as much fuel demand.
Just ask anyone with a diesel tractor new enough to have a regen mode.

The turbos increase engine stress, reduce oil life AND engine life, but do make more power for the same size engine- so they score high with street racers and emissions testers.
For a general duty every day work truck, a higher displacement naturally asperated engine will be more economical over its much longer lifespan, almost every time.
My little 99 tacoma would agree :)

Amazing finding people with common sense these days, well done. Problem is not enough of you are at the voting machines, they’re flooded with easily manipulated fools. I feel bad for the new generation, they have no idea how awesome cars used to be. Now they’re just an A-B tool that people have to impress their friends and neighbors with.

Talk to any common person and ask them why they like their car, i guarantee you it’s because of the interior features , or the way it looks rather that how it drives. Amazing

I'm a common person and I think fuel efficient turbos along with hybrids and EV motors are the way to go. Fancy electronics I don't need but hey, it's just the way it is and can't do much about it.

The pollution created to manufacture the battery used in a hybrid far offsets the pollution created by the difference in gasoline burned- and then you wind up with a toxic disposal hazard in the end- or two per car, if they last that long. Those batteries run about 8 years or 150k miles.
The Prius proved this- it was widely adopted by the Taxi system (another rabbit hole) but was only profitable due to the tax refunds granted to "green" vehicles.

Turbos wear out engines faster, and the extra torque wears out drivetrains/tires faster... All fun, but not efficient- the amount of energy used to make that engine/transmission can be measured in the hundreds of barrels of oil- if not thousands.

This data was pretty easy to find twenty years ago, how much energy it took to build a vehicle vs the lifetime fuel costs of that vehicle- but these days all you'll find is propaganda promoting these modern advancements that actually pollute more than the old ways- but the pollution is at the factory and the power plant instead of in your neighborhood so it's okay! Of course this model stops working pretty quickly once global trade collapses (look around...) and we can't outsource the manufacture of the plastic parts and batteries to china, the electrical parts to korea, the steel parts to mexico, etc
I can't find a beer emoticon here, so have a sammich :) :sandwich:

Well different battery chemistries are always being developed and used batteries will be recycled or used as battery storage. Are EV's perfect right now, no. will they be better for the environment to produce and at end of life, yes. The petrol tech hasn't changed in 100 years besides adding chemicals to try and reduce pollutants. In the first 3-4 years of ownership and EV will pollute less and cost less to own than an ICE vehicle. This gentleman may bring some insight.

The new 4 cylinder is a great engine. And this is humanity moving forward. Nothing wrong with that. Old folks that like the 6 cylinder, can still buy the used tacomas for a while.
“They don’t make them like they used to” lol
I say good to that. Let’s move forward.

Good luck during natural disasters, and good luck with the government charging you carbon credits and getting more invasive when they have you “hooked” on the grid. No thanks.

Sounds a little paranoid. But you can always not buy an EV vehicle and not worry.

Not at all, just realistic…. Have nothing to worry about, but would prefer my life not be controlled by government.
