What about having it wrapped in real leather by a proper upholsterer. Mine is ok right now but my 03 4runner had the same "leather" wrapped wheel and was a bit haggard by the end. When it gets worn out I thought about going that route in conjunction with a heated steering wheel mod :D

I could check with a local place and get an estimate.

Part of me may call Toyota C/S and see if I can have a district service rep take a look.

After working for car dealerships for 16 years, I kind of know the process I need to go to, not so much force the issue, but to get it to the right person that has the power to make a decision.

Anybody know what the core of the wheel is made of? Can I remove the wrap and padding and wrap the core myself?

you could try using aerospace 303 on your hands?? ;) or maybe try something less caustic for lotion like coconut oil or something.

I know this is a really old thread, but you might look at wheelskins.com for a high quality leather cover. I have one on every old car I own, including a 2001 Tacoma. It’s been on for the 4 years I’ve had it, I use all kinds of hand lotion plus I often jump in the truck with dirty hands. It’s tan, it cleans up easily and it’s wonderful in winter. The company has been around since 1977, they did OE work for Honda, not sure if they do any of that now. The one on my 2001 GTI has about 80,000 miles over the 15 years and it still looks no feels great.

I think I may have read about WheelSkins in this forum a few yeara ago. Until now, I still haven't gotten to installing one on mine. I'm thinking of going bare core, but it worries me that the material might melt under the sun.

    Edit: Spelling correction.
