I grew up hearing how they used to be called thongs in hushed tones because people didn't want them to be associated with underwear. Fundamentalist Christian church moment

My parents always called them thongs too (Midwest thing maybe?) so I did as well... I think when the Thong Song came out in 1999 I realized I should probably start calling them flip flops
