    Clamshell speaks to the design of the Toyota front differential, not all front diffs are clamshell design.

    Not sure why you don’t just count rotations of the of the flange while turning the spider gears. You could scope it and count teeth that way as well.

    I would use a spare CV or perhaps just an inner cup if you have one to better count the rotations as the front slip joint turns.

    Pull the drain plug and start counting as you turn the flange.

    Thanks, that’s good to know. Other threads and internet sources seem to indicate that you need to count the pinion teeth as well…
    43/10 = 4.30
    43/11 = 3.90
    Anyone have a list of factory ring and pinion combos for the front?

    This is for the ADD diff but if you're working with the manual just ignore the actuator part. Should cover everything you have q's on (removal, taking apart and reinstall).

    If you do pull it from the vehicle, might as well do the ECGS bushing swap in (if you haven't already).

    In the disassembly I did not do anything on page SA-48, or remove any oil seals or any bearings, spacers, races or retainers, or the companion flange. I just split it and lifted out the carrier to count teeth on the ring gear and the pinion, then set the carrier back in.
    Other than maybe doing the ecgs bushing, do I need to do do all this other stuff before I reassemble the clamshell?

    Nope, not at all. The info I added to the PDF covers just about everything there is relating to the front diff. It wouldn't hurt to change the seals and honestly, I would - especially if you have it out of the truck. Note however, you have to be careful when driving in the new seals. Review the procedures online (youtube) and keep this in mind if doing the seals. Doesn't have to be split to change the seals. Put it back together and go from there either way.
