What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

We played around there this weekend too. I think we escaped before it got too windy and soggy.

 

Doubled the value of my truck with this one weird trick.

 

I just had my case off today and it was not stepped like that one is. It's behind the w59.

 

What I figured. This must be from the 6cyl. Thing that messed with the old' grey matter was the number of splines I counted on the inside. thanks for confirming your 4cyl was different.

 

What an adventure changing the front diff fluid turned out to be

 

Anyone have an idea what this clunk could be, I have looked at the front end and I can’t find anything loose. Recent changes, durobump front diff bushing, RCVs, and new uni balls. https://youtube.com/shorts/9Or2S8-BK8k?feature=share

 

Oh man, that would drive the OCD nuts. Because you've had multiple changes, my best suggestion is start in the morning and start checking the recent change items. Once done, move on to the rest of the front suspension (nothing loose or damaged). CVs start there.

 

I sure hope it’s not the CVs. The price I had to pay for those RCVs I’d be so disappointed if it was them.

 

Might just need to be reseated

 

Only thing that makes me hopeful it’s not that, is it not a consistent clunk. In my experience cv issues sound more rotational

We had the place to ourselves. I was surprised.

 

Check diff mounting bolts, where you in 4wd when testing? Sounds like the pinion flange bouncing up and hitting the trans bell housing.

Or

If all tight, I'd drain and check your front diff fluid, sounds like a spider gear that's missing a tooth. Recent wheeling trips?

I was not in 4wd when checking. Not major wheeling trips recently.

 

Think I got it. The bolt through the uniball was about 1.5 turns loose. So weird. I replaced them a few weeks ago and after a week of driving re torqued them down. Pretty strange it would back off..

 

Not uncommon with new uniballs. When they're that tight, they can loosen the bolt when you turn.

 

Swapped out aftermarket license plate screws for those quality OEM toyota license plate screws.
