I was diagnosing a 120vAC > 24vAC step down transformer powering the natural gas solenoid + pilot on a gas fireplace. Everything works fine now, but I noticed when I grabbed the metal casing of the transformer it was hot to the touch even though it didn’t have a load - and makes an audible buzzing sound.
Is that normal? Or do I have a bad transformer.

    The black metal was hot.

Could be that some of the windings inside are shorted or some of the insulation is degraded.

can do some checks with a multimeter

X-formers get hot with or without a load because the jump from 120 to 24V requires that 96V to be expelled as heat energy, just like a resistor gets hot. Some buzz and some dont. Its probably fine, but could just be old. Those control transformers are cheap depending on the KVA rating so a replacement isnt out of reach if its bothering you.

Check to make sure the spades of the incoming voltage are tight tight. Buzzing and excess heat can be something as simple as a leg dropping out and as serious as the windings starting to fail. Know that with a load transformers will run over 100degrees normally

It's a small town in the eastern Sierras only option for gas. Even when gas was $2.99 in CA it was always $5+

I paid 7.50/gal in Fields, OR over the weekend. I felt bad for my buddy who needed 91 at 9.45/gal.

Don't let him fool you, he's a Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie; brown on the outside but white in the inside.
