Does anyone know if there are similar issues with White on the 4Runner line?

Bummer they couldn't stick with the winning formula, I have a '93 Toyota in Super White and it still looks like new - no issues.

My buddy has a '21 SW Tacoma and it's been fine so far. I hope you guys get a good solution on this, what a crummy issue!

Highly unlikely. One can hope, but I think a "if you end up with an issue, we'll re-paint the problem area" is a reasonable response. I doubt they will re-paint an entire truck if the issue is isolated to a few areas around fender/hood and windows.

Some people have issues and others do not. Through 11 pages of this thread and many others, we've yet to identify a common root cause (and I believe the same goes for most of the super white paint issues on other Toyota models). Hopefully Toyota has more data and is able to identify a root cause, but my guess is it is a randomly inconsistent or failed QC process at the paint application or surface prep stage.

Just curious what your dealer told you. I also have a '19 and so far no paint issues but this is my biggest fear with the truck now. Thanks!

I have a 2016 Tacoma ltd with 68k on it, Keep it in great shape and about a month ago notice paint pealing on the inside fenders in the hood gaps and along my driver side rear door window. I went through Bobby Rahal and Toyota and Toyota said FU! Said there is no recall nor a warranty on my paint. Not sure what im going to do. Love my truck but its starting to look like shit. I am NOT in the market for a new (used) truck so, I might figure out a way to wrap it till Im ready to get rid of it. Last Toyota for me! And Ive owned a few.

Called the Corporate line and they didn't want to do anything for me until I pushed them-- mentioned this forum and how many folks were dealing with the same issue. Then they finally said I could file a claim if I provided an estimate to fix the damaged area. What's precarious about this is that it seems like we all have the paint peeling in the same location.

This really should be a class action suit. It's clearly a manufacturing error. The way Toyota tries to dodge doing right by its customers is the part that irritates me. I've only bought Toyota vehicles. If they don't fix this I'll never buy a Toyota again.

I have a 2017 4 Door TRD Off Road with 040 Super White flaking off in 15 places.

What I find confusing is the inconsistency in Toyota's treatment of this issue. From two perspectives.

Firstly, some Toyota/Lexus models are fully covered, no questions asked. Tacoma's are not.

Secondly, and to me, the most the painful inconsistency is within the Tacoma owners group, where some are getting all affected areas repainted and others are being read the warranty boilerplate and being stonewalled.

I am on the list of those being stonewalled.

I posted a few days ago about my peeling starting on my rear drivers side window area. Went down to the dealership. Dealership said they are getting a ton of complaints and it's common for the 040 trucks. Gave me the 800 number to call corporate.

Corporate took my concern and got in contact with the dealership. The dealership scheduled a day for me to bring the truck in to get pictures taken. The pictures will be sent to Toyota for approval. If all goes well they will schedule a day with their preferred body shop.

    I'll report back with updates.

I called Toyota Corporate today(3rd time in 9 months) and got the same bullshit canned response. Called my dealer and talked to the collision center mgr. She said her husband had paint issues with his Taco and even she couldn’t get any help. She did tell me to bring it in for inspection and pictures which she would send to corporate. Maybe we can get something done under their “goodwill” policy. Potential repair cost split or something. I’m skeptical, but if everyone goes this route, maybe we can get some traction. I have 2 white Toyota trucks. There will not be a third one.

Hey there Harper, My White 2015 Tacoma just did the same thing yours did plus my paint is starting to peel inside a door jam. That's definitely not road wear but crap adhesion for sure. I look forward to seeing how you fair. I started my journey today by reaching out to Toyota corporate. They gave me a canned response in which I replied telling them that I expected more from a global leader in the car industry and that is a solution was ( on their end) was not provided- I'd be escalating this so i'm trying the polite approach first but as I work in customer service- I know who this all works so fingers crossed.

I mean- I have a 72 Plymouth wagon and 67 Dart with better original paint than my Taco.
Oddly enough- a few years back I had a Jeep do the same thing and the local dealer painted it for me no cost so at least Chrysler was upstanding at that point in time. Let's hope Toyota wants to keep their reputation in tact.

Thanks for providing the details of your approach Smokey16. I figured reaching out to corporate was my first approach but do plan to reach out to a local dealer as well. Funny thing was just a few months back- I had dealers calling me and offering to buy back my Taco. Did they know then? For me- I've got a cap on the bed, refurbished seats from another Taco inside so I've got a bit invested and would like to keep my Taco but yea- makes one wonder about future purchases and if they prices are really worth it.

Hi Chris, I reached out to Toyotas Corporate folks and they said that the extended warranty will not cover this issue or at least for my 2015 taco. Seems like the best route is to get to know a dealer, have them document this, take pictures and hopefully work a partial deal to repaint what needs repainting.

I must admit- I do like your approach. I work in customer service as well but seeing your tips is definitely a big help as I embark on this same journey myself and I just recently noticed my White paint starting to flake.

Also happening with my wifes 2017 TRD Sport. Very very upset about this. Also have spot where it looks like the clear coat is faiding or something even though it's garage kept.

Welcome to the club. If you raise enough hell they may take care of you. As soon as mine is fixed it's out the door and I'm getting an F150 or maybe a Jeep.

I'm sure some fantard will come in here and blather about how great Toyota is. Come buy my great Toyota dipshit. Three different paintjobs and counting to fix this garbage.

How many other issues have you had with the truck outside of the paint?

    Right on time.

Wanna buy it? I'll deliver it too.

    To answer your question

    Rear diff rebuilt under warranty

    Bad wheel bearing

    Rear brake light leaked

Has a weird vibration, according to them it needs the drive axles rebalanced or something.

Back when I had a bigger business I had three 2004/2005 chevrolet trucks and the only problem in 10 years of owning them was 02 sensors.

I was just curious. You should buy a new truck. Check out the new Ford Broncos. Heard the 2.7T V6 is rock solid. ;)

Crap, just discovered this thread after seeing my flaked off paint today.

Can we start putting a list together of dealerships and contacts that you have been able to get somewhere with?
