285/75/16 offset issue

Hey guys,
I’ve been a member for a while, just lurking and getting tons of good information! Anyways first time posting. I have 08 4x4 with 3” lift. Went to add a bigger wheel and tire setup. Got 285/75/16 with 16x8 0 offset. Put them on and ran into a big problem. They hit the brake caliper. Just wondering what the sweet spot is for offset. I don’t mind some rubbing where I can do basic trimming or heating plastic. I’ve heard a lot of people running -12. Just want to hear what your running and pictures would be great too.

 

Wheel spacers or 17"s.

 

I was thinking about adding Bora spacers. Just didn’t really want to go that route. But I guess if it makes them work…

 

What wheel? I'm running 285s on a 16x8 with 0 offset and had no problem clearing the calipers.

Hey op. It’s not the offset or backspace. It’s the wheel design. The shape of the backside of the wheel is the issue. So it’s change wheels or pick up a set of spacers. There are plenty of guys running 16x8 0 offset no issues.

 

makes no sense...they should work without issue.. 16x8 wheel with 4.5 backspace and 0 offset should fit..where do they hit the calipers? top or bottom? and do you have aftermarket calipers?

 

Offset and backspacing are the same thing for a given rim width. Its two different ways to describe the same thing. You can’t have an 8” rim width with 6” backspace and a -12 offset it’s going to be a +38 for that scenario. 8” width with 0 offset is going to be 4.5 backspace…. I agree with gotoman if other guys are running without issues it’s probably the design of the rim

Not cousins… the same thing, you asked what the backspace was and he told you without telling you when he said 16x8 0 offset. It’s just a different way to describe the same thing

 

The issue is either the barrel of the wheel isn't as large as what others are running or he's running aftermarket brakes. The SCS F5 in a 16x8 0 offset fits over the factory caliper.


285s on a 8" 0 offset wheel tucks into the factory fenders nicely and is flush at ride height.

If you have the wheel width and offset you can calculate the backspacing (1/2 the wheel width, plus the offset, plus 1/2") so 8/2+0+0.5=4.5

 

OP- you have a trd sport with larger calipers by chance?

 

Yes I have TRD package, 10k towing capacity. Not sure if it’s TRD Pro but yeah.

 

Agree with offset and backspacing is the same thing, just different ways for people to understand rims.

and like previously stated, if your brakes are stock, it is your rim design, or the face of the rim that is rubbing. Different rims have different spokes that can be problematic.

solution is to get different rims, or run a spacer. You might get away with a 10mm spacer, or might need a bigger one, depending on how much the rim is touching the caliper.

and I’m 98% sure that all tacomas had the same brake calipers. Only that the off road came with the special brake booster. Correct me if I’m wrong. it was the 4Runners that had a small caliper on sr5, limited, base, but bigger brake calipers on the sport.

 

This is correct. Backspacing/offset play a role but most modern 16x8 +0 wheels fit these trucks just fine with no caliper clearance issues. So the problem is the design of the wheel. You might be able to put a baidaid on it with a spacer but do you want to run negative offset? Personally, I'd be looking for wheels that fit better from the get go so I didn't have to run a negative offset. Plus, tire clearance will just be more and more of a problem the more negative you go.

 

If you have a 6 lug wheel there is not going to be a difference in brakes...doesn't matter if it's the base model or the TRD trims.

Also, no Tacoma has a 10k towing capacity. 6,500lbs is the highest towing capacity available on the Tacoma.

 

Is there any possibility you have the 5th gen 4runner "BBK" (calipers & rotors?), this setup requires 17" wheel minimum. The T4R Calipers look essentially the same as stock Tacoma calipers. You can verify easily by measuring rotor OD, it should be Ø319mm (~12.5") for stock Tacoma. 4Runner rotors are Ø338mm (~13-1/4") OD.

I only ask because wasn't sure if you just bought the truck or you have had it & know the history of it.

 

If it’s the stock brakes, it’s the wheel design, not the offset.

OEM 16” wheels have a higher offset and they clear the calipers just fine….
