2009 OEM Headlight Replacement

I noticed one of my headlights has moisture on the inside of the lens and both are hazed. I would like to replace with at least OEM quality but not upgrades. Want to avoid Chinese junk and the stealership if possible. What's the best OEM-quality replacement?

 

Probably not going to do better than OEM. Check out the dealerships online prices. They're usually discounted 33% from MSRP.

I want to do same as OP for my 07. All the aftermarket units have a concerning amount of bad reviews, moisture, haze, cracks, bad light pattern.

ETA: Looking at parts.toyota.com it shows two different lights that fit each side with a $60 each difference in price.
Anybody know what the difference is?

There's a chrome version, and a smoke (Sport) version.

The website might not list the smoked version as compatible for 2005-2008, but they fit the same as the chrome version

 

OK, thanks. Says $172 each at my dealer for the cheaper ones. The diagram looks like they come with bulbs, anybody know for sure?
I think I figured it out, these don't have bulbs. The part# in post above mine does.

I’ve tried eBay, Amazon and a couple different web vendors. None are as good, quality and optics, as OEM. I think the longest lasting were the Spyder brand, but they didnt last a winter. One large stone put a crack in one lens. Sucks installing headlights in -15* C.

Did you check you local dealer via the official Toyota parts site? If they can come close to that price there would be no shipping if you pick them up at the dealer.

 

Sadly, my dealership stopped doing that a few years ago. It was nice when I bought wheels and only paid a few bucks for pickup. I can't imagine what they charge to ship them now.

 

My dealer still does it but their prices aren't as good as some I see listed here. But some of those don't ship and the ones who do charge almost all of the difference to ship. That's why I have been putting this task off. My refinished OEM left isn't great and my newer right Chinese replacement leaks on occasion. The left Chinese replacement leaked like a sieve and a couple of the mounting tabs were off by a few mm, enough to be a real problem. Lesson learnt. So I am going to bite the bullet and get a pair of OEM. Edit: just ordered. Probably pickup tomorrow.

 

Stick with OEM. If you read through the zillion threads on headlight replacement you’ll find that the majority of people who replace their headlights with some fancy, expensive, high intensity blah blah blah lights have lots of prob with them. From failure, to water leakage, to frequent bulb replacement etc. etc. Just get Toyota OEM and be happy.

 

I replaced mine yesterday with OEM. I used the below video which was very helpful. I would suggest you get a bag of the plastic fasteners for the bumper and the grill. A few of mine were very brittle and not ideal for re use. I found it easier to remove both the plastic clip and the 10 mm bolt that secures the fender liner. Instead of re using the fender liner clip, i re secured it with a 10 mm screw/bolt as the clip was very old/brittle and not the same as the bumper/clips. Your liner may already be secured with a bolt as opposed to the clip. The video shows that the grill lifts straight out, but there is a tab that needs to be depressed on each side at the bottom inside corners.

When I swapped mine out, I never touched the bumper. Only the grill, and those pieces under the headlamps.

 

Yes. I think I could have flexed the bumper cover back enough to get my driver on the bottom inside 10 mm bolt holding the light.

One other note. When you reach up inside the fender liner to pull the 10 mm bolt, there's a 10mm nut immediately below it. You won't be able to see either and have to find it by feel. I pulled the bottom nut the first attempt. Go for the upper one. A 1/4 inch drive with a short ratchet handle helps.

It took me just over an hour for both, not including laying out tools and supplies.

I have long skinny arms. I was able to reach that bolt from where the grill is.

 

Yes, it would have only been a couple dollars cheaper and over an hour round trip plus fuel at $5 a gal. Just got email they shipped.
