I am in the market for a DCLB. As much as I love my 2008 RC 4x4 I need to upgrade for some more room. I found one that is about 2.5hrs from me with only 33K on it. Dealer is asking 29,000. Being that it is that far away I can't really feasibly just go check it out in person. Basically it would be a buy it over the phone sight unseen deal

Here's my concern, the frame has been coated in the black gunk they use so in the photos they sent me I cant really see what rust spots there may be. It was originally sold in KY so it is probably not eligible for frame replacement and that would expire in 2023 regardless. It's now in PA and would live in NY if I get it so it's gonna see lot's of salt. I'm familiar with the frame issues on these trucks, I had the frame on my 2008 replaced and was happy with it. Just wondering if it's worth dropping that much on a vehicle that old and with the frame rust issues tacos are known for....

Also I am not familiar with the V6 or automatic transmissions in these trucks, are they as reliable as the 2.7 4 cyl? The tacoma I have is the best vehicle I've ever owned, no major issues in the 5 years I've had it, which is why I am pretty stuck on getting another one.

    Any thoughts?

    thanks!

    Stock as all get out.
I live in Alabama and the only DCLB 4x4 TRD Sport i could find with low miles had 50k miles on it and was in myrtle beach, SC so i flew up and got it. I paid 24k but that was 2 years ago when the market was a little different. I have 100k on it now and have had no issues except for the secondary air injection system but my local dealer replaced that under a TSB so i didnt pay anything.
    - I wouldnt buy anything over the phone without physically being there looking at it. I dont understand why you cant go check out in person without buying it? Its only 2.5 hours away?
-Like you said check the frame. just because they painted it doesnt always mean they are covering up rust. check the inside of the frame for rust and bolts on the undercarraige. if a lot of bolts are rusted then that would be a sign they covering up rust on the frame with paint.
-With the low mileage it has you shouldnt have to worry about mechanical issues.

This. Never buy anything sight unseen that you can't send right the heck back.

Exactly what @AlHago and @Apple Jacks have said.

See it in person, and have someone that you trust inspect it.

It's not worth taking the chance of overpaying for someone else's old problems.

If you are that interested in the truck, have the money ready and just simply make the drive. It's only 2.5 hrs away. How are you planning on getting it home if you bought it sight unseen? Personally, I prefer the look of the 2012-up and no way would spend $30k on a used 2011 with questionable frame issues. There are very little concerns or issues with of the 4.0 auto.
