Helped out some of the gentlemen at church mill up (freehand) some pin oak. Not sure how the slabs will dry, as far as I know, pin oak tends to fracture as it dries but was good to help them out and run the 661. Should make some nice slabs for tables. Absolute FOREARM BURNER.

cool running the 661 alongside an older 660. Have to say, the 660 kept up well.

That's pretty good for free hand! Seal the ends with some anchorseal and it will help reduce the splitting and checking. Slowing down the drying process is the key. Keep it covered and out of the sun.

been saving the bookmatch for a couple years from a mango tree that fell down in my yard. I chainsaw milled it and put some of the smaller boards in a trash bag for a month to get some spalting and am happy i did. When I resawed this particular board I was stunned, the outsides look nothing like the match that came from the inside.

The rest is koa with wenge splines. I slavaged the koa from a chair in someones trash pile to go to the dump. They had no idea what they had.

Probably my favorite piece ever. I usually make furniture.

My take on a shaker step stool for my son. First one was sassafras, but one more tap when test fitting a tenon split it.
    Second try with curly maple.
First wedged tenons, first tusked tenon.

Test assembly before rounding edges, sand, transtint dark vintage maple dye, glue up and what not

Today's progress, coves, and radius cut on the outside square edges. I made a drawing bow and that helped alot.
Tomorrow is church so no time for wood work.

Has anyone ever used ferric nitrate crystals and heat to stain curly maple like they use on Kentucky Longrifles?

I think I am going to try it.

It might look the same as all my other recent pictures, but the 3rd and 4th epoxy coat went on today. It’ll come off the forms this weekend, then I get to play shaping and fiberglassing on the interior. Know enough now to hopefully not screw it up. Interior only gets two coats so should go quicker, then seats, trim, varnish, and see if it floats. I’m celebrating my progress tonight.
