Right?? I need to redo my deck but holding off cuz of this

 

Just talked to hubbs about this yesterday

 

is there a building code where you live ?

 

Did you do cost analysis? Such as how many Reeces cups can i buy if i dont redo the deck

 

Below frost on footing is the way we’d do it. Concrete slab will heave with frost and thaw.

 

Go below the frost line, played this game on our deck/sunroom. Things would move far enough each freeze/thaw cycle to make windows inoperable. 2 out of 4 footings were 8” deep, code here is 48”+. This seemed awfully sketchy but everything is standing now. Pictures show temp posts where 48” tubes went in, support posts went on top of those for deck.

Full cinder block seems excessive, requires a full 48” frost wall for support, may be better off talking to a carpenter instead of a mason unless you really want the block.

 

I did….deck will be put on hold indefinitely

 

I don't think she pays for them with money, she's just given them.

At least you’ll have pretty new siding but you should deal with the water intrusion or you’ll be in the same boat in a couple years

I initially saw the cheaper model at 299 and got super excited to buy and be done but then noticed the model number difference and of course price difference haha. Hard time for me closing on a house that needs repairs and building out the tool collection

 

The old porch is sinking in all direction. Wet land, used to be all trees here.

Will the below the frost line hold up better?

 

I never check. The only thing I know of is stairs thread height and depth.

 

Can doing above the frost line cause the concrete slab to shift?

The old porch is moving away from the foundation. There's no concrete slab with the old porch.

 

The old porch has shifted about 2" from the house foundation. One side of the aluminum roof support was sagging 3" to 4" on one side. Swinging in the winds. The other side was about 2" sagging. The hand railing on the landing has a good slant.

Temporary roof support might be an issue, by getting in the way of the machine. By the look it's solid concrete.

The reason we decided on the cinder block is less weight than the old porch. It's a lot more durable. Wood has to be repainted every couple of years. I can use ice melt and scrape the ice off. I think the bulk of the work will be breaking up the old porch.

Does the size of the porch matters on how tall the frost wall have to be?
