Yes 3 years for NHTSA to implement the rule, it was passed in late 2021 for 2026 models. Rule will be implemented by 2024 which gives automakers ample time to adapt and comply by 2026 models. It is federal law of the land now.

3 years to implement the rule, so no federal rule/law/mandate/whatever you'd like to call it until that takes place. All they've done is thrown money towards it as of now. Anything can happen between then and now. Unless we believe that everything thats ever been budgeted for came to pass, like roads being milled/repaved as an example.

Huh, i guess i just read it as federal law is requiring auto manufactures to have anti dui tech by 2026 models years.

edit: just read more, federal law is absolutely requiring it from auto manufacturers and the NHTSA will have to figure out the rules of implementation ( passive vs active systems ). So it’s not, “we set aside money and maybe auto manufacturers will do it”. It is a federal requirement by law now an enforcement agency (NHTSA) will of course have to create rules in order to implement. Not “maybe make a rule by 2026”. Kind of like when anti gun legislation is passed and the ATF updates and makes rule changes to enforce it.

Don't worry buddy, your reading comprehension is great; thats how it reads. But it also goes on to say that they have no earthly idea what that looks like or how long it'll take; only that they've given NTSB 3 years to make the rule and how to implement it. Meaning they're throwing money at this "mandate" that doesn't quite yet exist.

BINGO. But to answer your original question, and to not dive into subjects that just get us banned, I think its stupid, as are nearly every other "mandate" that gets thrown around.

I just don't see how any current technology exists to quickly verify a person is DUI. How would it work if the people drink or get high while driving? Will the car stop?

Exactly, plus imagine a person trying to flee a dangerous situation and having to go thru a freaking checklist of items before they can start the vehicle.

I, for one, cannot wait for my future new car to pull me over in the middle of the night in an area I don't know because I'm driving tired on my way to the next hotel/airbnb

The technology has already existed for over a decade, and is currently being implemented, it will just be used to determine if you're drunk rather than tired.

Low hanging fruit for the government to say they're addressing an issue, when they're just requiring minimal software programming to "comply" with the new law. Happens all the time.

Legally they can't have the car shut off, as that would present a danger to the occupants of that vehicle and others nearby.

There are the ignition interlocks that are used for repeat offenders here in MA (I'm sure most/all states) but it's a process. You need to pass the first test to start the vehicle, which I've read is going to be the case here as well.

On the current systems you have to retest in roughly 5 minutes, and then after that randomly 30-60 minutes thereafter. Not sure what this proposal would be but I'd surmise it's similar. Also, if you don't get a passing sample at first you can't start the vehicle..which is the idea of course but false positives happen more often than they should.

With the passive system, my concern is anyone in the car being intoxicated might trigger it for one thing.

Oh here's another thing. Monthly, the current system has to be brought to a station and downloaded etc at cost of about $150 per month. Hmmm wonder if this system will be the same...

So next time we go into lockdown they'll just keep everyone from being able to start their vehicles? Also sounds like a lot of people are gonna start randomly getting pulled over. Cars are snitching on you now.

Also the largest group of drunk drivers is males aged 21-24 which aren't purchasing brand new vehicles either.

I'll agree to that. It's just the slightest bit alarming that in the near future we may be asking our vehicles permission to drive them.

Well it could save the drivers life as well as other lives. The drunk driver that put me 2 weeks in the hospital and left me with permanent injuries walked away. So I'm for this. It was his 4th DUI and his dog that was in the back seat went through the windshield and died. This would have save me from injuries and the dog wouldn't have died. So if you're gonna play, you're gonna pay with an inconvenience of a car that won't start. Tough.
