I think the Thule blades would work. I had a set on an older Subi, they’re thin and offer little wind resistance. I would have used them of Yota, but they’re too short... expensive tho...

I'm running into this same issue. I actually just got the OEM cross bars, but they are too far apart. Did you guys find a crossbar that fits onto the closed factory crossbars? I see a bunch of crossbars available on Amazon, but it seems that these aren't able to clamp onto the factory crossbars since the factory crossbars are too thick (2.5").

What did you all end up doing/getting? anyone able to confirm an exact make/model of crossbar that works?

I don’t have all the details you are looking for, but there is a 3rd gen buzzing around my town with the Yakima bars sitting on top of the OEM rack. It sticks up pretty high, which would be a concern of mine. Crossbars and bar mounts vs crossbars and roof mounts probably is comparable in price as well.

If I see it parked I’ll take a better look and see how it’s attached.

    Nothing yet.
So is the consensus on this question that the only option for mounting a cargo box to the Toyota OEM crossbars is that it requires other crossbars?

I think the issue is front to rear spacing may be too far apart for some of the shorter boxes?

If you currently have the OEM bars I would measure them and buy the box accordingly.

If you don't have the bars but you do have a box, I would recommend going with a Rhino Rack setup or Yakima / Thule option instead.

Drill new holes in the Thule box to fit the factory rack. Tape over the old holes on the inside of the box (black electrical tape). That is what I did.

So if you run the crossbars in the stowed position, parallel to the edges of the roof, you should be able to run Thule Podium feet directly on them, with Thule load bars spanning the width of the roof. This is how my old boss (at a bike shop / Thule dealer) mounted the RTT on his outback.

I like the looks of the roof rack on the Tacoma. Considering putting them on. There was a post about wind noise. Is that a major noticeable thing? and what about and roof leaks after install?

it can be a little annoying to mount a roof box on a prinsu rack ... there isn't much clearance between the roof and bars, so you need to be strategic where it hooks up. looks like it'd be alot easier with the OEM one

Zero wind noise with mine, either stowed or "deployed".

I just picked up two sets of Yakima Mighty Mounts (8 total) so I can mount traction boards and possibly a slim storage case. Simple and clean.

I can measure the distance between holes for anyone interested.

Here's a link. You want the "39H" mount.
