I’ve searched a few other threads on the topic and got some answers, but had a question.

Driving home tonight, the Check Engine/Trac Off Lights came on. Checked the gas cap, took battery wires off/on and lights are still on. Drove it some and temperature seems to stay in the middle/not overheating and motor doesn’t seem out of the ordinary.

my question, I have to drive about an hour tomorrow (Sunday). Neighbor is a mechanic and said he wouldn’t have a problem driving it if it was his. Going to test the codes Monday evening. He said he assumes it’s some sort of an emission code, but he says unless the check engine light is blinking, he wouldn’t have a problem driving it. Any opinions?

update: drove to town, filled up my truck ($102), got back in truck, started it up and the lights went away. Still going to do a test, but wondering if it could possibly be my gas cap.

There's hundreds of codes that can turn the engine light on so speculating at it is pointless.
That being said if the truck is running fine and the light isn't flashing you should be ok to drive it just be aware that there are some codes that will put the truck into a limp/reduced power mode that will severely limit drivability and engine power.

I have an aftermarket stereo, and sometimes when shifting to drive, especially if first in reverse, it will recognize both R and D and will do the same thing, CEL and trac off. There can be any number of reasons, but the cel is what triggers the trac
