Don’t worry, Sony just announced PS5 production is about to ramp up 2H 2022…. What that means for Tacoma’s? Chip shortages are coming to an end….

this time next year 2023 tacomas will be -4K+ off MSRP like the old days

OP definitely didn’t get ripped off in this day and age for that specific vehicle. Maybe compared to 2019 prices he did, but try finding a new army green access cab with a manual trans. which is exactly what he wanted and he didn’t even have to really wait that long. If it was an auto I’d say sure, you can find one at msrp. According to autotrader there are 56 access cab manuals in the whole country and of that ZERO are army green. You gotta pay if you wanna play. In that region of the US securing a manual access cab is very very difficult. OP made it look easy. Knew what he wanted and pulled the trigger like a boss.

Is it though? MSRP is just another made up number and has no correlation to value or profit margins. The price of everything is set by the market.

That's wild. I'm definitely happy with my purchase. Again, if I had no time constraints and another vehicle, it would have been a different story. No regrets.

Is this a USA thing? All I heard in my area (Gatineau, QC) is no one will go below MSRP, but the second dealer I visited offered me a set of winter wheels and tires, and the third dealer promised me $1,500 rebate. Finally got $1,800 off of my TRD Pro.

MSRP is not an arbitrary number. It sets a reasonable amount of profit the dealer can expect to pay and gives the consumer information. There used to be no window stickers on cars at all, Senator Monroney fixed that to help the consumer limit how much he gets screwed. (Any old car dog may refer to the sticker as a Monroney.)

yes the market is the market, but sometimes you are being screwed, and sometimes you don’t care. Pay a million dollars ransom to a kidnapper to get your wife and daughter back? It’s the market, but still screwed. Pay 2x to a scalper for baby formula? Again market and screwed.

The car market is different because they are individually negotiated transactions in which the consumer has a disadvantage. The consumer is full of emotion and buys a car at most once every 3 years. The salesman if good moves 20+ units a month. The consumer can also easily bury $3k into $60/month payments.

the consumer does not want a good deal but wants to feel like they got a good deal, and the dealer wants to maximize profit. That’s all there is too it. With this whole chip shortage thing it’s an easy narrative to make folks who want the excitement of a new vehicle and maybe even really need it feel fear and overpay particularly when monthly payments are involved. It’s basic supply and demand, but the dealer is an expert and making the supply seem tighter than it is and stimulating the demand on each transaction. Same principal but different execution than say, crude oil and wheat.

if it were a blind silent auction that would be different. At that point you could say the market is dislocated. It’s not a commodity futures market. This is Lion vs Gazelle.

Just to be clear on my original comment, I do not work in retail side of business. I work for a manufacturer. My point was simply supply /demand right now favors dealers. As a manufacturer, we hate it, we know it is not how you build loyalty, but you cannot control dealer's pricing. Anything in high demand, they want to charge over MSRP. We are seeing much more than $2500 in some cases was my point.

I believe I said “in this day and age for that specific vehicle” That was the end of the sentence. Correct? Or no? Most would understand that to mean March 2020 to present day. When all of this started. And I still stand by that statement. Try finding an army green access MT at msrp. Even when they’re listed at msrp when you go to the dealer and they know your looking for a MT access cab, all bets are off. They’re not dumb.

Pretty amazing the gymnastics some of you will do to explain and justify overpaying.

Never claimed to be the best at anything, and I have done zero whining. Just going to advocate that people stop paying over MSRP for Tacomas.

If you don't like it, you can ignore me.

We get it. You are against people paying over MSRP because it prevents you from getting a Tacoma at / under MSRP.
Well, there are instances where paying over MSRP means less out of pocket for the buyer when alternative costs (time spent shopping, rental cars, travel to distant dealers) are considered.

If I have to rent a car to make my living until I not only find a Tacoma under MSRP, but take possession of it, I am going to blow through that markup pretty pretty fast...

Yea but most people aren't in that situation and still pay the mark up. Thats the problem.

I understand that everyone's situation is different.

Like a stupid team owner, it only takes one to over-pay to raise the bar for all others... That being written, it still makes sense for some to pay, even though everyone else will have to pay, too.
