Good evening y'all. My brother has purchased a 96 tacoma lx 4x4 5 speed V6.
We have replaced the spark plugs, coil packs, and wires. And also done a oil change and new oil filter. Started engine ran about 2 minutes then threw a check engine light and it's running really rich. Then CEL started flashing and he cut it off. Waited about 20 minutes and restarted it still has the CEL on but it sorta popping out the exhaust then goes away and comes back again. Still running rich and help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Just what code did you pull? The flashing MIL means this is not good engine damage quite possible shutting off the injectors .

No Fresh Gas and Fuel filter or did you forget to mention that.

Rodent nest in the air intake or intake manifold .

Sorry bout that. Fresh gas, and new fuel filter, and air cleaner. Has a rancid gas smell but we purged the fuel lines before we put everything back together.

My money is on a stuck injector, typically a flashing check engine light is an active misfire and a stuck or leaking injector is a pretty typical cause for that especially on something that's been sitting with ethanol gas in it.

Ok he replaced all 6 of the injectors this morning and it's still doing this. Could there be a sensor bad or is it maybe a bad (new) injector?

    What codes have you pulled?

I would have done that first before unloading the parts shotgun.

Definitely could be a bad injector, did they check the internal resistances before install?

I don't have any way to pull the codes right now I have a code reader but I don't have the adapter to go from the diagnostic port of the truck to my reader. At first it would crank then cut off no codes, so he decided to by all the parts and install them all at one time. He called me about ghe code reader this morning so here we are. No rodent damage that I can see which is very surprising for sitting this long. As far as I know he did check any resistance on anything. There was one injector wire that was broke and he replaced the pig tail for that injector.

Kinda shooting money into the dark with no codes to work off of.

I'd take a break and come back to it when you are able to get those codes.

I use a cheap ($99) blue tooth dongle and the Torque pro app on an old phone, had that set up for years, works mint.

I always check the codes if it does not connect there is your starting point.

I have a code reader in every post 96 vehicle.

We're on a break now, he's aggravated and I've ran out of idea's. I figured y'all know toyota's a whole lot better than me lol. I've got a code reader but I didn't know it had a odb2 port on it. Thought it was actually too old I'll go up there tomorrow after work with the reader and see what I come up with. Thank you all, for your help will keep everybody posted on the out come.20220605_122717.jpg 20220605_122718.jpg

Okay. I have a theory. You said you replaced the injectors? Unless you used real OEM injectors, that might be causing your running issues. So many counterfeits exist (even designed to look OEM). I suggest you try your old injectors again.

Looks like a nice truck, once you get the engine issue sorted out. :fingerscrossed: Did the seller tell you anything?

How about new tires if it's been sitting that long - age rather than tread depth? How are the brakes and the brake fluid is certainly due for a change after sitting that long.

Looks like a little detail work coming up on that one side. :p

He replaced the injectors with one's off Amazon. I'll let him know in the morning to put the originals ones back in. Seller told him he had replaced the clutch, pressure plate, and what ever else goes with that. Also had the oil and filter changed at that time. Everything else is in purdy good shape for sitting 6 years. Tires are dry rotted but he's gonna get that sorted this week coming.

Yup. My bet is injectors. Coworker had a Avalanche and he put non-OEM injectors in and he had a lean condition. Put the OEM ones back and it was fine.
