Northern pike minnow I think, formerly called squawfish lol
Some states have a bounty on them

Edit: maybe not a NORTHERN pike minnow but definitely a pike minnow (ptychocheilus) of some sort

Thanks for everyone’s input, according to local guys likely some sort of carp.

I don’t have a photo of the specific rainbow I caught but I do have these…

Im camping on Topaz lake and the dude with the beard took me out with his grandson and wife to learn how they fish. Needless to say they know how, they’ve been catching their limit daily!

I have a inflatable tandem kayak to get out on the lake on order, should arrive Monday :)

Also went and scouted the outlet canal and saw the biggest trout ever (had to be at least 24”), I may have found my white whale for the next 3 weeks!!

Holy hell what a fight this guy gave me! Dragged me around the lake for 20 minutes.
I was fishing for bass with a 6f medium rod (30 size spinning reel) 8lb mono and a texas rigged power worm (curly tail worm). I had no leader, a small folding net, and was in my kayak. He nearly rolled me over a few times trying to get it into the kayak. I was fishing 4 feet of water and this thing hit, felt like a thump then it started moving... then it started pulling me hard. I didnt get a measurement, but after I measured where is sat in my kayak and it was around 44-46 inches. In the end I got him next to the kayak, put my lip grip in his mouth and dragged it into my lap. I tried using my little folding net, but he bent it and broke the folding mechanism.

Trying to figure out how he didnt bite through my line, I think what happened was he got hooked right in the corner, then the line wrapped around his body. This kept the line out of his mouth and allowed me to get him in.
