That's the only reason I have kids. If I need some organs in the future, we will harvest them from the kids.

That's the trade off for supporting them for all these years.

I'm lucky, My daughter DNA is roughly 75% of mine, 25% of the mother. Thank God! Then again, it may not be a good thing.

My son's mother always says I squirted cloning juice in her.

She a good candidate for my future transplant. Hopefully I never need one.

Couple weeks back, I decided to remove the 8'x16' deck off the back of my house for multiple reasons. Primarily because it was attached to the house incorrectly 30 yrs ago. It was lagged/attached directly to the grooved western red cedar shakes. No ledger. No flashing. I also don't use the deck that much, I will be replacing this fall with a smaller 8x8 deck. I was fully expecting there to be major rot after 30 years. That black tarred board is from the original back porch. To my utter shock/disbelief/amazement there was ZERO rot. Other than the holes from some nails and the lag screws, the cedar shakes were all intact and dry. I'll replace a bunch with holes and some on the course above that had been nicked/damaged by shoveling in winter. Thankfully I have a partial box from replacing windows over the years. A few years back one box (25 sq ft) was $135. Now the same box is $325.

So yesterday I was replacing post-cap style solar lights on the ornamental railing on the front roof of our cape-style house and discovered that 2 of the 4 6x6 posts have what I suspect to be significant damage from wood insects due to the holes/pattern and the worse one was reduced to marble sized pieces of wood in the cavity. Its possible they were rotting first then insects. The worse one has a hollow cavity about 16" down into the post, the other is about 8". The worse one had what I'm 90% sure were ants in it, but not termites or carpenter ants. The 8" one had nothing live in it. Treated both with ant/termite spray and covered with a post cap for now while I figure out what to do.

So question is, do I cut the posts down to good wood, then scab a good post back on top? Or can I fill the cavity with some kind of epoxy? I don't know how the post base ties into the rest of the structure and roofing and don't really want to mess with that and get into the roofing unless I really have to.

If you want to do it right, rip out and replace with treated. If you want the easier way out, you could sleeve it with a PVC cladding that most fence/railing suppliers carry.

    https://www.weatherables.com/accessories/railing/post-wraps-cladding/smooth-vinyl.html

I always recommend the remove and replace route. Otherwise, you are just prolonging the inevitable.

I have some experience in this stuff.

If you don't want to open up a can of worms with the post to roof connection you could cut back the post to good wood and scarf joint a new section on top or go this route~

have you seen any literature on that stuff ? They use it to completely replace bottoms of columns on historic buildings creating a structural , load bearing fix

Looks like a great product, but with the quantity I would need, I could hire someone else to replace the whole post.

I think I may go with a foam filler for the short term and address replacing the full post when I eventually need to redo the flat roof in a couple years. And renew my termite treatment/warranty another year.

    Humor?

I have about a quarter pallet left - no real place for them, so if some crack I will swap in pinch hitters............this could be a new work out plan. Need to tell the wife!
