Are you sure that would make it not register that it’s following someone? I had an Apple Air Tag in the bed cubby box stuck to the top and when my girl borrowed my truck she said it popped up on her iPhone. I just relocated it to inside under the carpet since I didn’t think the distance would matter.

A buddy of mine lives in Jamul and had this in his front yard the other day. Maybe put it under your front seat.

It will be interesting to see how EVs get hacked to steal them. Theives will probably find ways to steal a charge, by draining your battery into theirs. Could end up being very dangerous.

No, they cannot be sure. If it can register by a pedestrian it can register/ping a car thief. Controlling reception to an exact distance and direction with changing environments would be complex.

I don’t have any empirical data saying it won’t, but just have my experience. I’ve had several people ride in my truck (front and back) with iPhones and no one was alerted.

So let’s say a car thief does get alerted about the AirTag. They’ll have two choices at that point. Stop to try and find it buying time. Or understand they’re getting tracked and maybe ditch the truck.

Everyone’s choice, but even if a thief is alerted, how many people are going to think to pull a tail light assembly to look for the AirTag? Or are they going to search more of the obvious places, bumpers, cubbies, wheel wells, interior etc.

I’m sure it’s not a fool proof plan, but at least it’s another tool to try and keep your property safe from a thief. But at the very least, it’s not an expensive way to give you a chance to get your truck back should it ever be stolen. Ultimately it’s each of our decisions to do what we feel is right.

To my understanding of it, both have to be moving (I could easily be wrong) together for a distance. I’m sure it’s not an exact science with the distance vs how far from the AirTag, but so far how I have it setup seems to work for me.

My point is they won't. That's not how it works.

They aren't under any obligation to rekey it because he fucked up. And lots will have an exclusion that states they won't pay if the vehicle is stolen because the keys were in the vehicle.

This is flawed because if your phone that the Air Tag is linked too is within the range it won’t alert other iPhones around you. What I’m implying is that if your friends borrow your truck without your phone being in the car it may alert them to being tracked. My girl left her purse in my car with an Air Tag and I didn’t get it back to her for a few days and it took like two days before it alerted me saying I was being tracked. So not entirely sure but she told me it’s because her phone that was linked to it wasn’t around.

Its okay for us both to be right or wrong. I'm sure you can provide evidence that an insurance company would NOT cover it, and I could provide evidence that they would. Its different per insurance company/comprehensive policy, so it really only matters what kind of plan OP has. Either way, at the very least, its a conversation he should have with his insurance company. Its not always the cheapest route if he has a high deductible (assuming insurance will cover it), but its worth the call to look at options other than hoping they don't come back again.

$650 plus installation costs isn't inexpensive.. I guess living in a lawless area has it's price(s).

i mean i only did the job for one of the largest insurers for half a decade... and our policies were very generous.

in your policy language it should state that you're responsible to mitigate damages.

if someone breaks the sunroof glass on your car it is now on you to park it inside or put a tarp over it to make sure it doesn't sit there and get filled with rain while you wait for an appraiser to come out and write an estimate, or while you wait for your appointment at service king or whatever.

if you call back in saying you left it outside and it rained all weekend and now every light on the dash is on, it wont start, etc, your claim is getting denied.

same goes for this key situation, he got himself in it, he should have immediately done what's already been beaten to death in this thread... headed to the dealer to buy a new fob and have them programmed which would have saved him from having to buy a club and a new steering wheel.

anyway. i'll move on while TS goes out and buys one of these and puts it on every time he parks the thing

Should have, could have, but didn't; so here we are. Trying to offer solutions. Congrats on your job history - sounds like the company you worked for probably wouldn't replace the fob according to you. My point is other insurance companies will. We don't have all of the info from OP, so neither of us can confirm or deny whether his insurance will or won't cover it. Again, I'm not even saying its the most cost effective option, but it IS an option to be explored, pending coverage plan. The important questions are did OP file police claims for each incident.

Over the years I probably picked-up over 100 recovered stolen vehicles for insurance companies. I’d bet at least 95% of them had keyed ignitions and most of the time the thieves would just hammer a screwdriver-like tool into the lock and turn/break it. It’s really not much of an inconvenience for the professionals.

Nothing is 100% theft-proof but using garages, hidden kill switches and parking strategically will increase your chances of the assholes not stealing your truck....
