Unless you're competing in competitions, yes. It's overkill for hunting too. I've never had an issue dropping multiple birds with a pump. Semi-auto is just a luxury. One that can prove to be expensive if you don't maintain it properly.

If you've got the extra cash, it's definitely not a bad choice.

I've got a Super Nova and SBE2. Both are great guns and I haven't had a single issue with either one. If you get a Remington get the 870.

The SBE2 will be the next shotgun I purchase. It seems every serious waterfowler has an SBE2 in their arsenal. Except me

I don't own one so I won't claim to be an expert. But from the reading I have done, gas operated Semi Autos are more reliable when it comes to shooting a variety of loads. But they have a series of gaskets and valves that sound like a nightmare to me.

Then you have recoil driven semi autos that rely on, you guessed it, the shell recoil. These tend to jam or become unreliable if you're shooting light target load or short loads. But, on the bright side, the mechanism tends to be simpler and easier to fix yourself if something goes wrong or gets dirty.

I'll defer to showmeballer on that one. I have not cleaned either gas or mechanical.

Damn man, you clean your Kimber after every shot. :D

No, it's not any harder than a semi pistol, just different stuff to clean. I don't break mine down after every session if I know I'm going to shoot it again soon. Just a few blasts of some CLP and some gun oil and it's gtg.

The maintenance on the SBE II is almost non-existent. The gun does not cycle using pistons or gas tubes. Of the 13 guns I own the SBE II is by far the easiest gun to clean and maintain. I can't say enough good things about it, you cycle 2 3/4", 3" & 3 1/2" shells without making any adjustment to the gun, it's incredibly light and all around an incredible gun. Of all the guns I own if could only keep one the SBE II would be it.

When I buy a gun (and truck) I also take into account re-sale value, look at how much used SBE II's are going going for and you will know that you are making a wise investment.

A semi auto in my opinion is in no way overkill when shooting skeet it's like power windows or keyless entry on a truck, while not necessary it sure is nice to have.

You are right in that gas operated shot guns can be nightmare when it comes to the gaskets vales etc.

However the inertia driven SBE II can cycle without a problem anything from a 2 3/4" light load to a 3 1/2" magnum without a problem. This is great because you can stagger the shells in any order and don't need to make any modifications to the gun. (Staggering rounds can be helpful when hunting or if you ever do any three gun competitions)

The only time I have had jams with the SBE II is when shooting the gun from the hip and not allowing the gun to recoil into my shoulder. Some recoil does need to be transferred into the shooter in order for the system to function properly.
