Sub’d, this is a cool thread.

I was hiking in Morrow Mountain State Park last month and saw some rocks stacked off the trail a ways. I thought it may have been a foundation for an old cabin and went to check it out. It was a very old grave stone, the park service must’ve put this plaque in.

What an absolutely beautiful place to be buried. Back in the middle 70's we came across several graves way back in the Davy Crockett National Forest, surrounded by a very old cast iron fence, all in aged disrepair. Beautiful park-like open oak flat with massive red oak trees. A few years ago we found flagging tape leading off the road in that direction. We followed it and sure enough, the gravesite was flagged too. We asked around and come to find out it is the burial site of the slaves of the founders of the city of Crockett Texas. Historical society is going to make it into some kind of tourist attraction. So much for the awesome deer hunting we have enjoyed in that neck of the National Forest.

I found a weird grave yard and thought of this tread. I took some pictures, but when I went to post them they just seemed disrespectful. The best I can do is describe it. First it is an active graveyard, with graves from the 1870's till 2022. Every graveyard my family members are in is like an HOA, perfectly manicured. This one looks like nothing I've ever seen. There was a guy sitting on a bench by a grave of someone he presumably loved playing an accordion. As a backdrop imagine Danny Boy gently playing across the graves. The plots are 4 times as big as the traditional graves. Families have built structures, put up benches and chairs from GoodWill, covered graves with fake flowers, put up signs with details of the person, covered graves with colorful rocks, made head stones out of concrete drainage boxes. What ever plant life that is there is either planted by families or natural and there is little or no maintenance. Yeah, I'm not even beginning to do it justice. Just image the house that all HOA's are afraid of and multiply it by hundreds.

Oh and the guy playing the accordion was awesome, I was sorry when he left.
