    RustyGreen,

I took interest in your post back in April about your Fedders 9,000 btu air conditioner. As a hobby I collect and restore these antique window units. I am eager to know what your plans are with the unit. I would certainly drop my wallet for it. Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    Vann

Welcome to the forum Vann :hattip:.

Congratulations, you certainly found perhaps the most obscure and unusual topic for a first post on a truck forum ever.

I'll pull some photos so anyone who happens along will understand what we are discussing.

Please post some pictures of your collection! Not too many folks appreciate the workhorse appliances of the past.

A very slim and stylish 1952 lady in her air conditioned bedroom.

Unit as found, it had sat in a garage for about 40 years.
The round grill rotates 360 degrees (by hand) to direct the air flow.

Lift the metal lit to access the controls and filters.

    Did some mouse house cleaning.

Compressor contact, maybe people were smart enough back then to not take the cover off and touch things?

It doesn't have a thermostat - just a cool position and high & low for the fan. The exhaust position runs the condenser fan only and is used with the door in the exhaust position.

This door opens to the outside in two positions - ventilate and exhaust. There is a screen to keep critters out. Closed when cooling.

    Plug not polarized or grounded.

Wiring diagram, back when folks fixed appliances. Notice the monster of a compressor lurking in the background. It is mounted on coil springs too.

The indoor (evaporator) fan, there is a coil on each side along with a mesh filter. Unlike most modern machines this has 2 motors instead of one driving both fans. This is part of the reason it weighs double that of a modern unit of equal capacity and also pulls twice the amperage -- 16 amps.

Thank you for the welcoming! That unit is in spectacular shape!! The compressor is a Tecumseh B series, 4 pole twin cylinder. Very heavy indeed. I’m surprised about the amperage, some units of that era pulled no more than 700 watts, of course they were around 3/4hp. Pulling 16 amps through those two little prongs. Wow! That’ll have clams slipping out of your wallet. This machine represents a time when it was about quality over quantity, and no energy efficiency standards. A simpler time. Right now I don’t understand how to upload photos from your phone as this website is confusing and certainly very new to me. As for the Fedders, would you consider an offer for it?

Here is a photo of most of my vintage units patiently awaiting restoration. I have all sorts of tools and knick knacks to the side out of view and on the workbench.

I also joined the forum last night because of this ac...although I do also own and drive a Taco, as does my father. Thank you for the additional pics. I tried to send you a pm but I don't think it worked. Was wondering where you were located...would love to see this unit in person or perhaps purchase it if you were looking to sell.

I have no idea how to take/post a video -- if I get the pictures right side up on the first try I impress myself.

I remember my dad coming home with one like that.. probably about 1960 or so. He got it used from the man he worked for. It was the first air conditioner we ever had.
