I wonder if your right. I’m going to have to test your theory. I’ll have to borrow an iPhone and go for a ride and see what it does.

Although, if it took two days to get alerted then it seems for the purpose of this conversation, having an AirTag where I listed is plausible for giving you a chance to recover the theft of your truck. For me it’s worth it for g$25 AirTag + case.

What I mean is if it took two days (I know the actual time is relative and will vary) for you to get the alert then typically you’ll know if your truck is stolen within that time and have a chance to track it to be able to try and get it back.

Regardless, the justification is still valid if a perpetrator does get an alert and still has the aforementioned choices to make.

If the thief has an iPhone, he will be alerted randomly between 8 and 24 hours. If he has an Android phone, he can scan immediately after stealing the truck and will be alerted in 10 minutes.

8-24 hours is still better then nothing. Even 10 minutes for Android. Point is, is about $45 worth it for a chance to get your truck back? Even if the thief does get alerted?

I was just stating the facts, I didn’t really have an opinion. 8 hours is good, 10 minutes not really. This means the thief can disable the tracker 10 minutes after stealing the truck. Not sure you’d notice the truck is gone so fast.

Is it? It's gonna show up eventually and when it does it will be stripped or damaged enough to be totaled. If it doesn't ever show up it will just be a theft total loss.

All I will say on the Air Tag debate is that it is 100% undoubtedly worth it. The cost of $25 for some sense of peace of mind without paying an additional monthly fee is worth it every time and I will do it again. On my old skyline I had to pay a monthly bill just for a gps tracker and even that failed to work maybe 10% of the time and I would get an alert that it was untraceable. The difference is this is a more modern vehicle and easily valued correctly for insurance purposes so it’s not as much stress if it does get stolen than other cars such as imports.

Interesting... now, wondering can GM's On-Star and such systems track location ? Surprising insurance companies don't push for such tracking setups or at least give a discount if you have one installed ?

Yes, and Toyotas newer system can track them too. But the car sends its location via the cell network. So all the thief needs to do is jam or break the cell transmitter and they don't know where the truck is.

Facts are you may never see your vehicle again or if you do it’ll be so damaged that the insurance company will total it. Especially the longer the thief has the vehicle.

But, if the AirTag is positioned in such a place where it is difficult to locate (Not easily found and turned off) then what it does, in theory, is buy you time and a chance to possibly locate your vehicle before it gets stripped and dismantled. I never said it’s 100% fool proof, but for $45, to me, it’s definitely worth investing in for that chance. Maybe to some other people too, but to each is own.
