Just wondering what everyone thinks about rust prevention/ inhibitors.
I have a pretty solid frame for New England but there are spots of scaling and rust.
Is their any best product to use to slow the inevitable, or better yet stop the rust from spreading?

    Thanks

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Fluid film seems to be the go to.

Get rid of the surface rust flush out the frame coat inside after it dries.

    repeat every fall.

If possible wash the frame after Winter weather adventures.

Ok cool, I was considering POR 15, but I will look into that.
If I can't get rid of all the surface rust (due to tight spots on top of frame) will it still do me any good?

Also Is there a good method of flushing the frame and getting good application on the inside?

Coroseal rust converter and primer for inside and outside of frame top coated with Rust-Oleum farm paint covered in Fluid Film outside and Fluid Film inside.
Undercoating spray gun with 360° wand extension for flushing with water after adding 5/8" hole for drainage at front and back of frame.

You are likely better off just using fluid film or any other sort of oil based product over a rust converter like por 15. But the best is both combined, just more time consuming.

Awesome advice, I like the idea of using the coroseal I assume it neutralizes the rust from spreading further using chemicals? I really want to keep it from spreading even after i seal it with a por 15 or liquid film.

Coroseal and por15 are similar in that they are both meant to convert rust and then encapsulate it. Coroseal uses a different converter than por15, which uses phosphoric acid. Using both of these wouldn't make sense. You'd want to use either por15 or coroseal then fluid film or similar linseed oil product.

NEVER COVER ACTIVE RUST. I can't stress that enough. Clean, treat and paint, sure. If you can't do that LPS3, Fluid Film, Wool oil etc is a far, far, better way to go.

I use Krown . Unlike Fluid Film it creeps into all crevices. After I had my frame replaced I used Krown for a couple years and a few months after coated with FF .
    Either will be fine

I will try to clean it as best as I can, but if I cannot get to bare metal and there is rust in any small pours is it still okay to cover?

Most converters only do anything if they actually contact rust. If you are going to paint over rust (or use a product like POR15 or corroseal) you want to remove the stuff that can easily come off and then convert what is left with something like phosphoric acid or whatever is in corroseal (the active ingredient appears to be proprietary so idk what it is). Phosphoric acid converts rust to iron phosphate and corroseal converts rust to magnetite. Phosphoric acid is what is in a product like POR15.

All that being said ideally you would get all the rust off and not need a converter. The concern is trapping moisture between the paint and rust allowing the rust to continue forming.

This guy does a good job of explaining the logic behind all of these different methods for dealing with rust. Once you get a better understanding of what these products do and what you can do, then figure out the route you want to go. In the end the easiest route is to just soak everything in oil so rust can no longer form. But if you want to really make things look better and try to take it to the next step, you utilize products like corroseal, rust kutter, POR15 etc. But solely using those products will only do so much because they eventually flake off and then expose the metal. Thats where regularly coating with oil based products come in to keep everything sealed.

While under the truck greasing the u-joints i took this picture of the undercarriage. Been krown'd every year since 2015 and has been exposed to every toronto winter where there is more salt on the roads than snow... Would say its working very well...

Here’s a crazy idea. Why not use the fluid film 360 sprayer and spray your used motor oil inside your frame every time you change your oil? I’m sure someone would have already thought of this if it would work, so what’s wrong with it? Environmentally unfriendly? Wouldn’t provide much protection? What?

Pretty much leave an oil slick everywhere you park. It does work. I know a guy here that essentially does that to all his work trucks. No rust underneath. But they park on dirt or gravel lots.

Yesterday i posted a picture of my Taco frame after the first coat of POR 15. Make sure you have the kit which includes the degreaser and the metal primer!
