Did you have it hooked up to log data? Hard to say it’s “lean” without real data to confirm. I’m a flat lander but I just came back from a 500 mile trip where I was in some hilly areas (Birmingham, AL) and didn’t experience anything like what you’re saying. Truck ran strong and easy up grades downshifting when needed and up shifting as well. My truck is mostly stock so not heavy and mileage was 20.7 mpg on return trip coming back south.

I don’t have any data logging. I didn’t expect issues, and I’m purely going of the sound it made every time I went up and down hills in the mountains. It sounds exactly like a carbureted vehicle running out of gas, and generally lasts 1-3 seconds. There was no noticeable difference in feel or power.

I haven’t pulled the plugs or hooked up any scanners since I don’t own one. I’m not particularly interested in having to log data or mess with the mechanics in general as I’m not a hobby mechanic anymore. I do hold multiple motorcycle manufacture certificate for mechanics, and I’m a mechanical engineer, but it’s not what I do for a living since I don’t like to work on my vehicles to keep them running, though I do like installing upgrades and toying with functional accessories.

Since my tuner lives far from me (3 hrs/$60 round trip), it’s not convenient to go back and forth. He’s not a mechanic or very mechanical from my experience, so I may just change tunes, or buy the programming and equipment to do the tunes myself. Orlando could probably use a tuner anyway since we only have Tampa and Jax to go to for the KDMax and some other tunes.

I’m looking for more input since I would find it hard to believe I’m the only one experiencing this. It’s more likely I’m the only one with enough miles and awareness to notice.

Not with KDM, but with OVT. I went in to get my rotors and a loose door panel adjusted at the dealership and it has never been the same. Everyone here said they most likely did not flash the truck, but it just doesnt feel the same. Some days it has some giddy up then most days, yes, the wet soggy throttle. Not sure if I need the ProXT tune or just go for the ECT always on mod.

@The_Taco_Jon On a side note, you could try new gears? :notsure: Just like there's no replacement for displacement, a tune will never provide the physical advantage of a lower gear ratio while running larger tires and additional weight. Just a thought. Dump trucks don't make it over hills on fairy dust.

I'm convinced if I just keep waiting things out until everything "settles" on one final updated version, I'll probably have wrecked and totaled my truck, sold it, or died by then. I'm growing content with a really old crappy version of a tune because I'm cheap I suppose :ballchain:

I agree, but the gearing is not the issue. Neither is power.

I will be upgrading to 4.88 and air lockers, but I’m good for awhile.

PapaRee provides stellar service, is a hell of a nice guy (just got off the phone w/him), and knows what he’s doing. As it turns out, we believe something got glitched in the update, or my new fuel pump is defective, and he’s helping me resolve it now. I still think the KDMax is a great and safe tune, and I’ll report back once we’ve established the update and I have a chance to test everything.’

BTW, the post wasn’t meant to alarm anyone or to bitch. I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this for the sake of group knowledge and improvement.

Got it. Hopefully, you get it figured out. I did the 4:88s with a locker up front from ECGS, but I had a local shop install. LMK if you have any Q's when the time comes. Did you say lockers?

Not to get too off topic, but now you're talking! Keep in mind, that once you do it, the front diff gear oil will sweat out of the breather tube. Apparently, that's normal. Here's the air tank and compressor mount I use (if you don't have a 2nd battery there). But a compressor can be mounted anywhere, including behind the front grille. GL! Let us know how it goes with the truck. Also, some 19's are having loose plug issues, so you might want to check those too.

My 2017 Tacoma was running weird before and I checked the plugs. One was completely loose and had a ton of blow-by and carbon build up. May be worth checking this or going to Auto Zone they will hook your truck up to a scanner and pull any trouble codes for free. Easy place to start that most likely will solve your problem.

KDMAX is fantastic, truly, it is wonderful and worth every penny
I have about 40 miles on the pro xt file and it great.
I have not done any highway yet, just my daily commuting, but I am eager to do some highway driving to see how it feel vs the regular pro...

:bowdown:I dropped in sport today and I’m running ‘87 on a 2021 M/T. I can’t believe how smooth it is when I shift now. Tip in is perfect. After 50 miles I have already seen an increase of 2 miles per gallon on the highway and even more in the city. Great power getting on the highway too! I don’t know how you did it but I am loving this! I’ll post an official review after a few tanks of gas but holy cats! Awesome!

Been through a couple tanks on XT now, it's settling in real nice. The truck as a whole feels..."lighter" for lack of a better descriptor, that extra power isn't gonna blow your clothes off but it definitely makes light work of the armor and 33s I've got. Mpg is definitely up as well, in the neighborhood of 18mpg avg but I've gone from upper 200s to a tank to 341 miles last tank and that's a much more tangible number to me :D

Do It! Before trying tunes I had a sprint booster which helped a lot. The problem with it was that there was still lag in the pedal and starting out and moving through gears was clunky. The Sport tune is the perfect balance between a sprint booster and other tunes.

Sport is responsive but very smooth. You can let out the clutch at 800 rpm’s and she won’t snub or stall. She just goes!! My sprint booster is removed from the truck and put back in its box.
