    Convicts get a lot of attention, are supervised, and have outdoor time in the exercise yard. They get to watch the outside world through the bars, and walks with shackles. So yes, imprisonment is a point of view, seen differently from different perspectives. Yes, your idea of a catio is commendable, akin to the reforms undertaken by zoos around the world, but still, not true freedom to roam until hungry enough to come home. I wonder every night, is my Cheddar OK out there? Is he in trouble and can't get home? Then every morning, I get my wakeup meow(s), glad to see ya! I'm home and I'm starving, feed me now!
    You mention rescued cats... That translates to trapped feral cats to me, who seldom make affectionate domesticated pets. Ferals are not a natural part of any eco system, and should be eliminated. If people want to make pets out of them, OK, but they should not be allowed to propagate in the wild.

    Wrong! Where do you think todays house cats come from. Over 90% of our pet house cats are born in the wild, in other words feral. Granted a cat that has been in the wild for some time are often difficult to make domestic but definitely not impossible. Almost all of our furry little buddies are rescues of one type or another. A very tiny fraction of our cats come from professional or home breeders.
    As far as feral cat not being a natural part of any ecosystem (however you want to define that), there are thousands of things that are foreign to various ecosystems. Hell, man is not a natural part of various ecosystems. Not a reason to kill feral cats.
    As far as propagation in the wild, I agree we should try to reduce that. There are numerous people, groups and organizations that trap/capture feral cats, have them “fixed” and return them to where they captured them. The vet trims the top of the ear so when they are released they are easily identifiable as fixed.

    @Sprig
    Where do you get those percentages from? Rescue? Born in the wild? 90%? I don't buy it. Just because there is a cottage industry in "Adoption Fees" for cats doesn't make 90% of house cats ferals. There are those low life humans out there who make a living capturing cats, a bounty paid per cat, no matter if feral or domestic outdoor cats. Professional or breeders small percentage, I agree. There are still fertile domestics out there in larger numbers than captured cats of any ilk, and it is the born-to-domestics that outnumber the captured.
    Oh, and fix a feral to turn it out again? Not with adoption fees on the table. We humans are so gullible, we think we can make a feral love us if we love it. Feral is feral, once accustomed to the wild, it will eat your food and sleep in your house, but is still a "don't pick me up" feral.

    The Queen (mother of at least three litters) closest to the kittens is now fixed. Three of the kittens have owners lined up. Will get the male fixed next and then the other female that currently has a litter.
    Trying to thin the herd but keep a couple around for the outside mouser duties. 20220606_084239.jpg

    This was a feral kitten, she was abandoned and found inside our boat. She was very young when I caught her in a trap and found her in the morning. By that evening she was fine with us humans. For whatever reason, she chooses to be mine. I think a couple of possibilities; I was the first person to see her face to face, and I possibly spent the most time playing with her as a kitten. We had a routine where she would crawl under the coffee table and stick her paws out to try and get me. Always very gentle though. Skidder.

    Well, I live in a BIG CITY - I have cats buried in my 'garden' that were killed by nice people who like to poison or speed up and hit them. Grover was my last outdoors kitt to get KILLLED by either poison or a car (the jury is out on that). The 3 kitts that I lay claim to came from outdoors and I will not let them (one was put down a while ago) go outside again. Maybe in a country atmosphere they can go out, but not in an urban setting. The 3 that are left outdoors run the other way when my front door opens, although Mr. Sox I think wants to come inside. I feed them, take care of them when the need arises and bury them when they pass on; I get very anxious when I don't see them on my porch for a day or so, especially at night. That's the part I hate the most - missing my outdoor cats; I am attached to them like a dad!

    My indoor cats have 'escaped' a few times - Peppa only once and she ran back in when I went back inside. Igloo has escaped a few times, but fortunately I caught her and carried her back inside. Robie would run the other way when the door opened if she was near it, she was very afraid of the 'outside'. :hattip:

    Loosing a furry child is as hard as it gets. Sorry for your loss. I wouldn't trade a single second with them, even with the pain of losing them.

    My heart goes out to you, I know it is never easy having to say goodbye even if it’s in their best interest, I know she was so grateful to have you to look after her for the little time she had on this earth.
