Anyone know how big of a pain in the ass it is to swap a t-case in a 4G Runner with a V8? Rumor has it you have to pull the trans with it...

You do not have to pull the trans to do it, no. It's actually a pretty easy swap if you have a cradle for the t-case, which I made for my swap when I went to the FJ t-case in my 4G 4Runner V8.

What t-case are you swapping to? Stock again or the correct choice and going with the FJ t-case?

I have pics and some explanations in my 4runner build thread, linked in my sig.

    Cool...thanks Todd!

I took a look at a 2003 Limited V8 with 242K and a bad t-case...based on that and the other work needed, they're too hot on the price...going to take an El Paso.

So you have a better idea, I paid $4700 for my 2003 with 284k miles on it back in 2020. Completely stock Limited edition. The t-case ended up being bad in that it wouldn't shift into 4hi/4lo. Common issue when the electronic controlled t-cases aren't actually used enough. The FJ t-case is pretty much a direct bolt-in swap. It does require some fabrication for the shifter stick and cutting a hole in the trans tunnel but the trans does not have to come out. Also new driveshafts are needed. The FJ t-case I got was from a 2011 with 130k miles and cost $250. The driveshafts I had made new and were about $600. So less than a grand to swap to a reliable t-case. All the other stuff is cake. Just remember that with the V8, you should do the timing belt and water pump, regardless of what you are told about when it was done. It's fairly easy to do and the Aisin kit isn't super expensive, like $200-$300.

Yeah, they're wanting $7K...hard pass. So much trash out there, and they want stupid money for it.

Timing belt/water pump is always a fun job...I've done both the 3.4 and the 4.7, and definitely prefer the 4.7. And unless they were done and documented by a reputable shop with verified Aisin parts, I'll be changing them.

I'm really looking for a 2005 Sequoia for a DD/light trail rig in addition to the Tacoma...that has everything I'm looking for in a drivetrain out of the box.

Findley Toyota had a 2007 Sequoia up here, 250k miles. Front and rear bumpers trashed, inside definitely worn. They wanted 9k for it. Someone bought it though.

Unless I come across a smoking deal somewhere, probably going to wait until we move to UT in the spring...one less vehicle to transport.
