My 2008 had rust deterioration in the exact spot, right by the muffler. Knew about the recall and had the frame coated, but it still rusted. Unfortunately there is a 12 year window to address holes in the frame. I ended up trading it in for a 2015. Now i have a new 12 year window. haha

I already fixed places on mine, I guess i need to look into getting it coated but don’t want to waste the money until its right. I love the truck and ive put it through hell so I know it’s tough, fairly easy to work on too. This is my first Tacoma, Ill buy other trucks but im hoping to keep it for the long haul. Or buy a newer model without that issue

Heck yeah, you made out! I ran the vin for a recall on mine but wasn’t lucky enough. I’ll replace or repair the the rear frame if I have too myself then get it coated and Itll be good to go!
Also the problem with the coating is the rust is already between the layers of metal so it doesn’t even slow it down if it’s already in there

yes, the dealership that did the undercoating sprayed right over the existing rust. Morons! I really went back and forth about getting a newer truck. Really liked my 2008, but 169k and things starting to be replaced and then the frame discovery, it became a no brainer. Good luck with whatever you end updoing.

This thread went in a different direction, sorry about that! Back to the subject I got some sweet cup holders that fit right inside my old ones! Pretty pumped about that!

Wire wheeled, degreased, metal prepped, and POR-15’d my frame today. Will post pictures tomorrow. But I did run across this and oddly enough you all are talking about it. Going to take it by a shop to get a weld quote tomorrow. 36941139-B546-4740-815F-C8ED8B0A2AAF.jpg020FB984-6E5F-42F6-9032-CE6BC26D61EB.jpg

Today I replaced the struts and upper mounting brackets for the rear flip up window of my fiberglass shell. One of the struts busted and upon closer inspection both mounting brackets were twisted and each had busted one of the pop rivets. Drilled out the old pop rivets. I ordered new struts and brackets from Amazon, guessed at strut pressure of 40lbs. each. Took my time picking which brackets to match the bend for the mounting "knob". Brackets were perfect, struts are a little too much pressure...that window really pops open now. I also ordered Steel pop rivets, there was no way I could use my hand held rivet gun to mount those. Had to drill one rivet out that I partially set. Used aluminum rivets instead. So far so good...bought a 6 pack after I was done and rewarded myself for a good job.

When you break camp, what is the name of that campground and could I fit my 24'8" Minnie Winnie RV in?

Did you check if those leaf springs are subject to a recall from Toyota? I had the leaf springs replaced for free as part of a recall on my 06 Tacoma. They were no way as bad as shape as yours!

Can you share a link to the frame pieces? TY!

Also, is there such a thing as 'front only' side steps for our trucks? If I have to get full length bolt-ons or weld-ons, I will. MY wife stated that steps would make it easier for her to get in. Happy wife.........

I just checked my 2008 service records for the frame service. It was checked with no rust found and crc treated in 2015. In 2019 at 76k miles they replaced the leaf springs, serviced and replaced coolant, did a seatbelt warranty repair and checked the old stock wheels for cracks. The 2012 doesn't appear to have any required recalls except for the secondary air pump done a few months ago along with the transmission flush service. I guess those frames weren't affected by the recall. I already replaced all the other fluids, spark plugs, belt, hoses, pcv and the maf/tb cleaning at 150k on that one. Still plan on going over both frames very soon.

I’ve had the recall replacement. But these are actually Deavers that I installed.. not impressed at all with the rust that accumulated. Just POR-15’d them today.

Nice job on the flooring! Toyota makes vinyl flooring for our trucks, which I upgraded to (I'm sure some people would consider it a downgrade), but I'm sure your solution was cheaper.

2in in the front and 0 in the rear as of now. I have everything to do the bamf shock relocation for the rear, I just need to commit a Saturday to doing it all.
